I thought there was a thread on here from way back about good suits but I could not find it.

Anyways, I need to get a good suit and was looking for any advice. I've always had "decent" suits here and there but nothing I've really thought was all that great. Thoughts on any brands or shops is appreciated.

Just dress like this guy, and you can't go wrong.

Bin - Give me a general price range. There are bargains and rip offs at all price points. The best off the peg I can think of right now is probably Canali on Bluefly. Their jackets are canvas, not fused. You can see the workmanship throughout. They are about 700ish at Bluefly now - less if you can get your hands on one of their many 10-20% discount coupons. May seem like a lot, but is really a great value. Much better than the $2,000 Versace piece of shit that they made for $200 and 15 min of hand labor.

Mens Warehouse, bar none! Good Suits at great prices and even better service. They have helped me out so many times and made suit shopping so easy I cannot even look elsewhere.

If you hit Filenes Basement at the right time you can get some pretty nice deals. Their stuff changes all the time though. I got a really nice Hart Schaffner and Marx there for about $500, they get some fairly nice Hugo Boss for around 3-400 in sometimes. Some of their stuff is flat out crap though you just have to weed through it. They have more recently started separating stuff out onto racks by the designer so its easier to find what you want.

I'm sure I will stay somewhere in the $500-$750 range, but if I find something I really want I'll spend a bit more, probably in the $1,000 range. I do not wear suits often so it would not be worn a ton.

I'm just looking for something pretty classical and is not based on the latest fashions. I'm sure I will be going to a local tailor as opposed to a department store as I have never had much luck at those places except for sportcoats.

That's where Manfred got his job interview suits. They look delicious on him. :p

It sounds chintzy, but you can pick up a nice suit on ebay and have it (re)tailored to fit you. I picked up a charcoal window-pane pattern Giorgio Armani (Collezioni - not the most expensive Armani - regularly $1600-$1800) suit for about $300 and had it tailored for another $50.

I didn't have any trouble with the size. I bought in the same size as all of my other suits and it was very nearly perfect for me, but I don't know if it would always work out so well.

Also, the tailor that worked on it said that it had been altered at one point, so it sounds to me like it might have been purchased, altered, and returned to a store (Saks), thus leading to it being on ebay.

Could not agree more. I didnt realize that there was a Filene's out there or I would have said this first. If you go to Filene's, two brands to look for are Corneliani and Oxxford. Oxxford are hands down the best suits made in America. The President wears them for Gods sake. You will not find a better off the peg suit at any price. It will last you the rest of your life if you take care of it. I have seen them at Filene's for about 700 ish. Corneliani is good as well, and can be had for about 100-200 less.

As far as patterns, not sure what you would be using it for, but obv solid navy is the most flexible, folllowed by solid charcoal grey. If you like patterns (I LOVE pinstripes), stick with subtle ones to begin with as, again, they make the suit the most flexible.

I don't wear suits very often but there's nothing worse then spending good money on a suit and not getting it tailored.

That JC Penney's suit will look a LOT better if you get it tailored.

That may be true, but that JCPenney suit will also look a lot nicer than those designer ones when you take it out of the washing machine.
