had a chick as me what she should do because her car was a model year 96 and there was no pump for that particular year. apparently she thought that particular gas station only serviced cars built in 87, 89, and 93... i told her to go to the full service station down the street. safer for all involved me thinks...

Mythbusters tested the cigarette and gasoline thing. Cigarettes don't quite burn hot enough to light liquid gasoline (fumes were not tested IIRC)...But I don't think I would be tempting the man upstairs to punch my number early...

On a side note, you can light gasoline with static electricity produced from you cars interior. In other words, make sure you touch something metal on your car before you pick up the pump nozzle...

My wife, whom I was dating at the time, got home from work and smelled natural gas in her apartment. I told her to leave immediately and call the maintainence staff, to see about calling the gas company, etc.

The guy who answered the phone said to her "Go back in your apartment, LIGHT A MATCH, and see if the pilot light is on".

Fucking nimrod...the guy from the gas company (who we called right after that) just shook his head and said something to the effect of "You'd be surprised at the percentage of people who would have gone and done it" to which I said "No, I wouldn't, unless it was low"

Saw - actually that was still a big danger with her being inside the vehicle, she still has to exit to turn of the pump. Spark - discharge - flash / burn. (Let alone the obvious part about having an engine running).

Yeah, the show I saw about static electricity warned against getting back into your car while the gasoline was pumpimg. You can "recharge", for lack of a better word. Then, if you arc to where there is gasoline, well, I think we know what happens next. The show actually filmed an example of this happening. I had never thought of that before, but static can have very high voltages. I am paranoid now and always touch the outside of the door when existing my car...
