Toddler's temper ousts family from plane By JIM ELLIS, Associated Press Writer

ORLANDO, Fla. - AirTran Airways on Tuesday defended its decision to remove a Massachusetts couple from a flight after their crying 3-year-old daughter refused to take her seat before takeoff.

AirTran officials said they followed Federal Aviation Administration rules that children age 2 and above must have their own seat and be wearing a seat belt upon takeoff.

"The flight was already delayed 15 minutes and in fairness to the other 112 passengers on the plane, the crew made an operational decision to remove the family," AirTran spokeswoman Judy Graham-Weaver said.

Julie and Gerry Kulesza, who were headed home to Boston on Jan. 14 from Fort Myers, said they just needed a little more time to calm their daughter, Elly.

"We weren't given an opportunity to hold her, console her or anything," Julie Kulesza said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

The Kuleszas said they told a flight attendant they had paid for their daughter's seat, but asked whether she could sit in her mother's lap. The request was denied.

She was removed because "she was climbing under the seat and hitting the parents and wouldn't get in her seat" during boarding, Graham-Weaver said.

The Orlando-based carrier reimbursed the family $595.80, the cost of the three tickets, and the Kuleszas flew home the next day.

They also were offered three roundtrip tickets anywhere the airline flies, Graham-Weaver said.

The father said his family would never fly AirTran again.

Turned on my TV this morning and there was Diane Sawyer/Robin Roberts talks to these idiots on Good Morning American. I didn't stop to watch the interview but heard something about Diane asking them "exactly how big of a temper tantrum was (insert child's name) throwing?"

Those of us who like Airtran say thank you. Nobody would want to be on a flight with you people anyways.
Absolutely right. (This is a vote from someone who does not particularly like AirTran, but sometimes has to use the airline for business travel).

Absolutely. I fly AirTran all the time and have nothing but positive things to say about them. What they did with giving them 3 round trip tickets was going out of their way for these people. They were only following guidelines and how could these people expect them to continue to hold the flight up for the other 100+ people on it? If you can not control your 3 year old enough to get them to stay in their seat on an airplane for a short enough time to get in the air until the seatbelt sign is turned off, you need to seek parental counseling. I have a 4 year old and a 1 1/2 year old and we have flown with both several times. My 4 year old initially did not want to have his seatbelt on either and be in his own seat, but you bring things with you to entertain them and make sure they are rested and ready to go for that day. It's not rocket science people. Anyway, enough with my Dr. Phil impression, just these types of stories make me nuts.

I can understand why some children would get upset during a flight, especially during the takeoff and decent, not knowing how to equalize the pressure in their ears, but preflight!?! Control your kids. I for one don't like to fly due to several inflight experiences, I just want to take off then land. That would've pissed me off listening to a child scream her head off delaying a flight that I'm not thrilled to be on in the first place.

I can't stand when people can't control thier kids. I especially can't stand the people that don't even try and act like nothings wrong when threy're acting like heathens!!! I wouldn't of given them the free tickets I would of given them the number to the local parenting counsler

It is because of people like this that I bought some of these. I highly recommend them to anyone who spends any time on airplanes.

No kidding, Nasty. One of the main reasons I bought some noise-cancelling headphones is so I don't have to listen to screaming kids on the subway.

This reminds me of one of my friend's blog entries. He's a stay-at-home dad of 3 girls, and this is one of his entries:

I won't go into details about our fight back home from Texas. Suffice it to say that, upon arriving at Newark airport last night, a woman--a complete stranger--came up to my wife in the terminal and said, "Well, that was a nightmare."
When enough readers commented that they wanted more details, he wrote:

The goings-on onboard the plane were hardly spectacular or blog-worthy. In fact, they were quite dull and can be summed up in one sentence.

Victoria screamed for the entire duration of the flight.

If that is not enough detail, how's this:

Victoria screamed for the 47 minutes that we sat on the runway, with the engines off, waiting for permission to take off.
Victoria screamed as the flight took off.
Victoria screamed while the flight was airborne.
Victoria screamed while sitting in her car seat.
Victoria screamed while not sitting in her car seat.
Victoria screamed while taking a walk to the back of the plane.
Victoria screamed while she was at the back of the plane.
Victoria screamed while taking a walk back to her seat.
Victoria screamed while the stranger who occupied the sixth seat in our row ordered his second vodka and Sprite.
Victoria screamed while the passengers in front of us shot us dirty looks.
Victoria screamed while the passengers behind us shot us dirty looks.
Victoria screamed while the lady four rows back (four rows back!) came to see if there was anything she could do to help.
Victoria screamed while the plane landed.
Victoria screamed while the plane sat for 18 minutes on the runway because another plane was sitting at our assigned gate.
Victoria stopped screaming when we disembarked.
That's pretty much it. Lila cried and fussed some, but not much. Kathryn was magnificent as usual, having long since learned the ability to ignore either twin.
I have not spoken to The Mom about her reactions to the trip, but I suspect she was thinking the same thing as I:
Dear Lord, if you are really there and you can hear me over the screaming, please grant this plane catasrophic engine failure at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
By the way, his blog is http://www.lookydaddy.com. It is one of the funniest blogs I've read on the Internet.
