Ok so lets do some figuring here. If you say that the ticket office gets an avg. of $40/ticket.

With 100000 tickets sold, then that is 4 million a game * 7 games that is 28 million dollars.

That is a whole helluva a lot of money, that is not including all the parking, concessions, and all the other stuff that they charge an arm and a leg for.

My whole thing is, how the hell can they be in debt. They pull in so much money that they should just be swimming in it. Instead they are debt above their heads, so they figure, why not charge an arm and leg to the students, who are the ones paying the university already, and then paying more on top of that to attend the games.

They have debt right now because of:

1) Ohio Stadium expansion/renovation
2) Schott
3) Bill Davis
4) JO Memorial Stadium
5) Golf course remodel
6) Larkins/RPAC rebuild
7) Rowing center?
8) New tennis center?
9) etc.

When we say debt, that doesn't mean they're not taking in enough to cover expenses. They make a profit every year. Debt as in long-term debt, as in just about every Fortune 500 company has debt. Debt is necessary to grow and expand.

To me student basketball tickets do seem pretty overpriced considering there's a lot more games to attend and a lot of the students get crappy seats.

Football, on the other hand, is still a bargain. I've never met a student in the 6 years I've been around here say that they're not buying football tickets because they're overpriced.

People, not just students, will pay almost anything for OSU football tickets. Why do you think alumni only get the right to purchase one pair to one game per year? Why do you think there's a minimum donation reaching into the thousands of $$$ just for the right to then buy the tickets? Why do you think there's still a long waiting list for that right? Why do you think ther's almost never a public sale of tickets, except to the first few snoozers?

The AD supports more varsity sports and more varsity athletes than any other in the country. If they want to raise the price of a ticket by a buck, they're going to do it. It's not going to turn anybody away.

I got into a game for $47(two tickets) in 2003. The tickets were in 13AA(May have been 11AA). Pretty damn good deal for tickets in that section.

The thing that really spoiled my first buckeye game was that we almost lost to SDSU. The final score was 16-13.

After that year they raised the ticket price $1 to $48. Then the next year they raised the tickets $10 to $58. And I think this last season(2005) they raised it $3 or $4 more to $61 or $62.

I still think its a bargain to get into a buckeye game for that. If they wanted to charge $75, I would pay it.

You are exactly right about the debt thing. Every company that you can think of has debt. Ohio State is not losing money on a year to year basis. Think about this. When Title IX first started most schools got rid of Men's sports to comply. Over that time Ohio State has actually created more womens varsity sports in order to comply. If they were in any kind of financial trouble they would not be creating teams

Football is the only sport at tOSU that ends up making us money after all expenses included. If you look at all the other sports, we lose net dollars every year. A good reason that it will take awhile to get out of debt.

Be happy they don't raise student ticket prices at the same rate they raise tuition. If the prices are too high for students to afford then maybe those students should eat (or drink) out one less time a week. Seems like a valuable lesson on how to budget your money andhow to decide what is more important to you. pizza & wings VS. OS basketball & football? Easy call for me.

I agree with you, but I think with as much money as they are bringing in and making a profit, that they should be able to get out of debt or at least not be the top in the country.

As for the football tickets being a bargin I agree, but I think the higher those tickets go the less students that are going to attend the bball games.
