Student suspended over call from mom in Iraq

I have a question that I doubt anyone has the answer to, but something to think about.. Do we know that the kid was telling the truth about talking to his mom in Iraq? Maybe that was his story as he's talking to his buddy who is skipping school? I'm not saying I don't believe his story, but I have no reason to believe his story, either. Is it confirmed that his mom is even IN Iraq?

Honestly, if I were the teacher, I would have let the kid go. But if I think the school has the right to enforce its rules. Though I think 10 days is pretty steep.

"Kevin is now back in class at Spencer, following a conference in which behavior expectations were discussed and methods of supporting Kevin were outlined," the statement said.

"Kevin will not be penalized for his two-day suspension, and his guardian will meet on Tuesday with Kevin's counselor and teachers regarding his overall academic progress this semester."

As someone who's father is currently serving in Iraq, I can say that I would have told the teacher to piss off (in a more polite manner). I have only had the opportunity to speak with my father 3-4 times since he has been there. Though I do contact him through email quite a bit, it certainly makes your day when you get to speak with them. Obviously my dad speaks with my mother more frequently, but he is fortunate enough to be able to run up larger phone bills, a lot of soldiers over there are not. Probably in this case, the kid is waiting for that call....no matter what. Bad move on the schools' part.

As NJ posted, the kid's back in school. The suspension was reduced to just the last half of last week after the school and school district were swamped with complaints.

Since Columbus, Ga. is a town with the army base right there, you'd think they would have handled the situation better.
