Strong Junior Class Will Headline Warren Harding Roster in 05

The 07 class at Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio is already shaping up to be one of the best in school history. To date, eleven players from this group bench at least 300 pounds, with several more just below that mark. They will look to use that strength this season as WGH will try to bring the Division 1 championship trophy back to Warren, somewhere it hasn’t been since 1990. This junior class will play a huge role in this quest as they will return many experienced players from last season, in addition to some up and coming athletes who are ready to make their mark. They started out their high school careers playing against teams the likes of Cleveland Glenville, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, Akron Hoban, and Lakewood St. Edward, all of which were solid contenders for in their respected divisions (Mooney won the Division 4 Championship last season). Several leaders have emerged in this group and they are confident about their chances this season.

“If we continue to work hard and play to our full potential, we can contend for the state title,” Sidney Glover says when asked about this upcoming season. Glover, who checks in at 6’0, 200 pounds, is one of the better athletes in this junior class. As a sophomore, he started at middle linebacker and also saw time at tailback. This season, Glover will start at both quarterback and apache. He currently benches 330 pounds and runs a 4.5 in the 40. “The fact that I’ll be playing both sides this year motivates me more to get in shape,” Glover added. Glover performed well at camps at Ohio State and Michigan, and he hopes to follow that up with a solid season on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, the biggest playmaker on the roster is tailback Dan Herron, who started in six of eleven games last season while totaling 757 yards on 145 carries with 10 touchdowns on the ground, adding 14 receptions for 176 yards and 3 TDs. Herron, who is receiving early interest from Ohio State, Michigan, Purdue, and Miami (OH), expects a much bigger year out of himself this season. “I’m hoping for a big year out of myself so that I can help my team,” Herron says when asked about this season. “We have to take it one game at a time for fifteen games. Our goal is to win the state championship.”

Marlin Parker, a 6’2, 220 pound defensive end, is another talented junior who looks to take his game to another level in 05. He has used this off-season to get bigger, stronger, and faster, pushing his bench press to an impressive 360 pounds and his 40 to a 4.7. Parker is confident in his teammates and expects a big year for WGH. “We’ll be better than last year,” Parker says when asked about his team’s potential. “If last year’s starters do what they have to do and the up and coming players reach their potential, we should be pretty solid.”

WGH experienced both good and bad times last season. They have used these bad times to motivate them to strive to get better. “We were a decent team last year, but we definitely don’t want to repeat the results that we had in the middle of the season,” says David Harsch, a 5’10, 205 outside linebacker who was one of the teams leading tacklers as a sophomore in 04. “We went through some growing pains, but it only pushed us to get better.” In addition to leading the linebackers, Harsch is expected to see playing time at fullback, something that he is really looking forward to. “I want to carry the ball, but I know that I’ll be doing a lot of blocking. I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team.”

In addition to having so many experienced juniors on the roster, there are several others have the potential to make solid contributions for the Raiders in 05. “Reggie Scrivens and Ian Vasil both have big play potential. Vasil came up big for us a few times last season and hopefully he can give us a lot more this season. Tyon Flowers will be another one to watch out for. I’m very excited about my team’s potential.”

The junior class at WGH is loaded with leaders, playmakers, and even some sleepers. We’ll have to wait two years to see how many of these players emerge from this class to play at the next level, but right now their focus is on 05. Warren fans will have the luxury of watching these young men continue to develop and mature as their careers progress. The goal of this team is to win the state championship, and the junior class will play a huge role in reaching that goal. They’re confident, but with WGH playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, they know that nothing will be handed to them. The journey begins on Friday, August 26 against Cleveland JFK.
