In Texas..
I may have an opportunity to relocate and work for a company near Steubenville. Is it a decent place? What are some of the better towns/cities that would be an easy commute? I haven't lived in Ohio for several years and I don't remember being down that way.

I've been to Austin a few times and seems like a damned nice place to be leaving for Stubenville or the vicinity. Just saying that a lot of industry has left there and with that type of exodus comes many other problems with the area and other employers...In this economy, I would stay if I were comfortable, but not knowing your desires to be in OH...

I grew up about 30 miles north of Steubenville (East Liverpool). Do NOT move there. I rarely ever visit it anymore because it's depressing.

The southern suburbs of Pittsburgh (Upper St. Clair, etc.) are about 40 miles away but Allegheny County taxes are ridiculous. Washington County PA is in between and probably better than you'll find west of Steuby or in WV.

I have the pleasure to travel to Steubenville once every couple months. I've taken coworkers on calls in Steubenville. The general consensus is that you would have had to have been born there to live there. They don't make steel down there anymore (there's a tin plating mill and a couple rolling mills). RG Steel just went belly up and owned ancient blast furnaces and a rolling mill.

The only connection I can see between Texas and Steubenville (and the Ohio River Valley) is shale gas and oil...and fracking. I see trucks from Texas traveling all around Ohio, all with the same reason: bringing in demand equipment (fracking pumps, drills, etc). If you have an opportunity to make some big cash for a few years (5-10 years), move to Steubenville. The money may make it worthwhile.

There's no other reason to move to Steubenville.

There's always Mingo Junction too.

I work in East Liverpool and I agree with Jake, unless you are getting PAID, stay where you are.

Youngstown/Steubenville on down is in full Rust Belt mode. The decline has been steady and ugly.
Pittsburgh area has been revitalized a bit and could work out well for you.
But really can't compare Austin to Pittsburgh.
Take Austin every time.
