Star player on average team, or average player on great team?

Throughout TP's recruitment, I was thinking about this choice and I'm just now getting around to making a poll.

The question is: Would you rather be a star/standout player/BMOC on an average team, or would you rather be a 'face in the crowd'/relatively average player on a star-studded championship team?

Think of this as a high-school recruit. You know you've got game, enough to be a star at a mid-major program. But you'd have to work harder than you've ever worked to crack the 2-deep at a powerhouse school.

I didn't think about the question enough before I answered. If my draft chances were equal either way I'd want to be on the better team.

At the professional level, I'd rather be an average guy on a great team. At the collegiate level, I'd rather give myself the best opportunity to further my career, so I suppose that means that I'd rather be the man. This would probably be different if I had the chance to play at Ohio State. I couldn't turn down such an opportunity.

But if draft chances were the same, I agree with BuckNutty.. I'd rather be on the good team.

Probably a star player on an average team; since being the "star player" on the field (at any school) translates to being a "chick magnet" off the field.

Nutty's cavaet is the big issue here. We really have to define what "average" is. And where that translates to draft position. Because in all honesty if I was a star high schooler you are thinking NFL. So what gets me best draft position? Does an average player on a great team start (or see alot of playing time?)

Or does "average" mean in the eye of fans. Where I can still be considered a stud in the eyes of the NFL.

Well, that also depends on the position you play. It is hard to be an average QB on a great team. Same with RB. Wheras you can be an average Lineman on a great team.

But if I am a stud RB, QB or WR on a not so great team I will be drafted higher. Whereas if I am an average Guard versus the stud OLineman on an average team my draft position might be the same.

But more often than not if you are an average player at a skill position on a great college team your playing time is limited, so your draft stock has questions.

So in the end... depending on position there are probable more positions that you end up getting drafted higher because you are a stud on an average team.

I guess I started this poll because lots of standout highschool athletes have to make this choice every year. Some of the lists of offers seem incredibly diverse, ranging from bad MAC teams up to top tier BCS schools.

Some responses bring up good points - that 'average' players at top-tier schools get a look from the NFL and putting up great numbers as a 'star' for a 5-7 MAC school may also garner some attention.

I guess I like the guys that are willing to check their BMOC attitude from highschool at the door and compete with the best of the best to make a name for themselves at the big schools.

If you would have included the above sentence in your original question/post, then I would have voted differently. I was under the impression that there probably wouldn't be any starts, let alone the opportunity "to make a name" for oneself, at the great school.

The votes have evened out since you made your clarifying post, suggesting that others may not have understood the question as well.
