Stanford 24, USC 23 (FINAL)

Taking the heat off? They lost to Appalachian State! Nothing that anybody else has done this year is strong enough to mask the odor created by that steaming pile of a performance. Nice try though, scUMbags.

Losing to to App State is like banging Roseanne Barr. There is nothing that can explain that away. Losing to Stanford is more like banging Anna Nicole Smith. Sure, you may have nailed her when she was bloated and strung out - which in many ways is just as bad as banging Roseanne Barr, but in ten years time all people will remember is the name and people may reasonably assume that what you did may not have been all that horrible.

Call me crazy, but I agree with the "taking the heat off" when you consider the following:

1. scUM was not ranked as high as USC: they were ranked #5, not #1 or #2, depending on the polls.

2. scUM had a lot of defensive holes to fill (Hall, Woodley); USC was SUPPOSEDLY the best defensive team in all the land.

3. scUM had a home winning streak of 7 straight games: USC had a 35-game home winning streak. Their prior loss was in 2001: Tressel was just getting started at tOSU when that happened!

You know what makes M*ch*g*n's loss bigger? You can make a long list of well-reasoned points like those, and all anybody has to do to respond is say:

"Appalachian State"

Here's a short list of things that will last forever:
  • Diamonds
  • Cock roaches
  • Twinkies
  • M*ch*g*n's loss to Appalachian State.

And the part that still blows my mind regarding this game was something I watched on ESPN this morning. Kirk H. was doing the "Good Call/Bad Call". The question was: "Should USC be out of the Top 10 after the loss to Stanford?". 83% of the public that voted said, "Yes". Kirk said, "Bad Call". And it all boiled down to the hope/expectation that USC is going to right the ship and end strong with a Top 5 end ranking. I sat there stunned. WTF?! It's not about how they should/will do; but where they are now!! I guess that the media just can't help their love-fest with the boys of USC.

So many times, in all of these guys' lives, they are told that they can't do something .

You're absolutely right Jim, your average student traveled a long and difficult path pebbled with personal struggles... before it leads him to Stanford

The adversity those poor downtrodden Stanford students must go through...I just can't imagine it personally...

Hey... if I were on a team that was a 40 point dog against USC, I might turn to crack!!! Oh... oh... the horror.

You're right, its very important for them to have risen above that adversity...

All their trophy wives will now be just that much hotter.

Well the media dropped SC farther than the coaches did, so I guess you mean the "coaches just can't help their love-fest with the boys of USC."

Actually, no, that's not what I meant. Neither poll dropped USC out of the Top Ten. A difference of three spots at the bottom of the Top Ten is miniscule in my opinion.

The fact of the matter is that SC is getting preferential treatment in this situation. I daresay that if it were just about anyone else in the US that the drop would have been more severe. The poll positions of SC are based on nothing more than hope/expectation; not present results which is what the polls are supposed to be based on.

Edit: I forgot to add that if the shoe were on the other foot; then I wouldn't have any problem with tOSU being dropped very far in the ratings. Had Northwestern put it to us in the 'Shoe; then I wouldn't be maintaining a line of reasoning that is based on speculative hopes/expectations.

Appalachian State = scUM's 1-AA "cupcake" game.

Stanford = Pac10 division opponent.

That's the difference right there, Stanford plays USC every year, they are familiar with each other. Division opponents pull out upsets all the time, Oregon state and UCLA upset USC last year, this year it's Stanford. Now, a major program like scUM, who was in the list of pre-season teams to be contending for the National Title shouldn't EVER be beaten by a 1-AA team, at home, in front of 100,000+ of their fans.

Sorry, think what you want, but scUM still is a larger failure in my eyes.

People are getting hung up on the fact that the Stanford-USC upset was the biggest ever according to Vegas. Vegas did not have a line on the Appy State game.
vegas doesn't have lines for 1-a versus 1-aa games. however, there was at least one "rogue book" that had the ttun/asu line at 28.
