Ohio State Planning to Sell Jersey Patch Sponsorship As Part of New Deal with Learfield

Sponsored jersey patches could be coming soon to Ohio State’s uniforms.

As part of its announcement on Wednesday that it had agreed to a multimedia rights contract extension with Ohio State, Learfield revealed that Ohio State is “engaging brands that are highly interested in pursuing a jersey patch partnership with Ohio State in anticipation of the NCAA rule change.”

“As one of the most celebrated schools in college athletics, boasting 36 sports, a jersey patch opportunity with Ohio State would represent one of the most highly coveted sponsor partnerships in college sports,” Learfield wrote in its news release.

Sponsored jersey patches could be coming to college sports as soon as the 2026-27 season. Sports Business Journal reported last week that the NCAA’s Division I Cabinet is slated to discuss allowing sponsored jersey patches during competition at next week’s NCAA Convention. While no vote on the potential rule change has been scheduled yet, there is “optimism” that sponsored jersey patches will be allowed next season, according to SBJ.

Multiple schools have already sold jersey patch sponsorships in anticipation of the change. LSU agreed to a jersey patch deal with Woodside Energy* in October, while UNLV announced last month that it had struck a deal with Acesso Biologics to be its first official jersey patch partner.

Wednesday’s announcement comes as part of a contract extension between Ohio State and Learfield, a college sports marketing company that works with many of the biggest brands in college sports. Per SBJ, Ohio State’s new deal with Learfield “includes a three-year extension through 2036 and will see the parties enter a revenue sharing relationship designed for Ohio State and Learfield to capitalize on one of college sports’ most prominent brands and sponsorship machines.”

“It’s a critical juncture in college athletics, and this is the ideal time to lock arms with Learfield, to continue to provide best in class opportunities and lead Ohio State Athletics for a long time into the future,” Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. “Learfield’s expertise brings a full range of capabilities that allow us to continue to maximize the largest sponsorship program in the country through even more commercial activity that impacts revenue and further capitalize through innovative sponsorships and NIL strategies, which help strengthen our entire athletics program. We are proud to continue our long-term affiliation and transformational partnership with Learfield and continue to maximize the Ohio State brand power here in Ohio and across the country.”

LSU Signs Multimillion-Dollar Jersey Patch Deal Before NCAA Approval

Just sayin': Silly me, I thought Nike was the jersey sponsor. In addition to the B1G patch, you play in a bowl game like the Cotton Bowl, now you have a Goodyear patch. Before too long the jerseys are going to look like something in NASCAR...... OK, besides "Chico's Bail Bonds"... who do you think would be a good jersey patch sponsor?

Their Hawaiian pizza is my favorite. I usually try to have one at the campus Donatos (depending on the game start time) before or after the every home game.

If this shit is for real, I’m out. We went from “preserve tradition” and to Roosters jersey patches

Needless to say, the new and improved "get as much money as you can" tradition overrides any jersey tradition we may have had.

NCAA approves uniform patches, opening up new revenue streams

The NCAA unearthed another revenue stream Friday when Division I leaders approved patches for uniforms in a move that could generate millions to fund athletic departments that are looking for new ways to pay players.

Beginning Aug. 1, Division I teams can place up to two patches of no more than 4 square inches on uniforms for regular-season games. Those are in addition to the logos already allowed for the uniform manufacturers.

Rules committees for the postseason will decide how to handle March Madness, the College World Series and other playoff tournaments, with attention being paid to making sure individual schools aren't advertising for companies that compete with NCAA sponsors....

The College Football Playoff has also been looking into how to allow patches for that sport's postseason.

Brainstorming companies for Ohio State football’s commercial uniform patch

Fun ideas for who could appear on a patch on Ohio State’s uniforms in the fall.

Currently the Columbus Blue Jackets have a Safelite AutoGlass patch, the Cleveland Cavaliers are sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, and the Cincinnati Reds had a patch from Kroger on their uniforms last year.

So who could we see as the Ohio State jersey sponsor this coming year? The battle to earn the coveted spot on the iconic Buckeye uniforms is something athletic director Ross Bjork has been waiting to sell off ever since he was picked to replace Gene Smith.

Now that the NCAA has approved the sale of a jersey patch, Bjork probably has meetings already lined up with all kinds of companies from Columbus and around Ohio.

Since it’s frigid in Ohio right now and there is a snowstorm barreling towards the state, I figured today we could have a few laughs since it’s something we all need because everyone is on edge making sure they are prepared for the 1 to 47 inches of snow that are being predicted to fall around the state.

Today we are going to look at some of the best and worst Ohio State commercial jersey patches. Some are obvious fits, while others are a bit outside of the box, and then there are some that are so awful it’d be funny.

Kurgis & Associates

The most intimidating commercial jersey patch would definitely be the Kurgis & Associates patch. Just stick Kevin Kurgis’ scowling face on a patch on Ohio State’s jersey and I’m not sure the Buckeyes would ever lose a game again.
Whenever I see a Kurgis & Associates commercial, I’m usually cowering in the corner but the end of it since I feel like Kevin Kurgis is yelling directly at me. The Buckeye defense would never give up more than 10 points in a game again!

Buckeye Donuts

This is what the people really want! Buckeye Donuts is a campus institution and it would be a match made in heaven if the rest of the world could learn about the greatness of Buckeye Donuts.
This will never happen since it’s way too much fun to think about and Ohio State doesn’t deal in fun.
