No. 6 Ohio State
Offensive philosophy
There's nothing flashy about Jim Tressel, who favors a clock-grinding ground attack. After the John Cooper era, which was more wide open and prone to big-game meltdowns, Tressel has refocused Ohio State back to its Woody Hayes roots. Things might open up some as the quarterback personalities change, but there never will be an aerial circus in Columbus-at least not as long as Tressel is around.
Defensive philosophy
This unit blends big-play ability with assignment-based football. The staff favors a 4-3 and will mix coverages, but it isn't going to take many risks. Tressel prefers to overwhelm foes with talent and discipline instead of gimmicks.
Game of the year
November 20, vs. Michigan. What does this game mean? Just about everything. You have to be a grizzled football veteran to remember a time when it didn't have a direct impact on the Big Ten championship. That's why it captures the nation's attention year after year. That's why it's the best rivalry in college football.
Bottom line
Don't expect Ohio State to play in the BCS title game. The offense has questions, and although the other side of the ball is strong, there are playmakers to replace. The Buckeyes will be good, maybe even 10-win good, but the real fireworks will come in 2005, when all the youngsters have grown up.
