Split from Taz thread- JT and OL coaching discussion

Kyle Young/Cade Stover man crush. Stomp!
  • Don't think for a minute JT doesn't feel the heat in Columbus right now. He will never show it, granted, but he feels it. Hell he wouldn't even be our "beloved" coach, if it didn't pain him to have the running game the storied program of OSU is putting on the field right now, if he didn't. With that being said you can bet JT will be concentrating on rectifying that situation. What better way than to have the best OL recruiting class in the country followed by maybe the best RB class? Taz will make a great addition to the Buckeye family and will be a major cog in the Buckeye championship machine for years to come. Good Luck Taz and heal up well.

I think the sentiment's in the right place, but the phrasing may not be quite what you intended. Does he feel the heat? maybe. IS there heat? most likely not (yet). The point is, Tressel doesn't need heat. He knows what needs done, and he's going to do everything within his power to see that it happens. He views his job as fielding a winning football team, yes, we all know that. I think its more important to him that he do a good job as a mentor to the young men in his care--to see that they develop as football players, as well as men. THAT'S his job, and he's doing it well.

You're right, though. The trenches are central to our success, and the recruiting of the last two years show a definite trend toward strengthening this aspect of our game.

edit: get well, taz. Avoid wisecracking bunnies.. their gifts are probably also to be shunned.

Perhaps JT and staff are concerned about having all of their starters in the same class.

I don't necessarily support the logic...BUT you have to admit it would be tough to recruit any OL in '06 if we just signed the first string for the next four seasons. OL depth would again be an issue in '07/'08. Additionally, it will be difficult for the team to see the entire line leave in the same season. I think JT is trying to establish some rotation in the turnover rate at the starting line spots. This year is perhaps a good example of what he is trying to avoid: Too many first time starters thrown into the fire at once.

Personally, I think you can't sign too many great lineman and if the talent is knocking I don't know why you wouldn't let them in. Look back at the OL recruiting for the 4 or 5 years before this class. Pretty light in the numbers and it is showing. Virtually everyone signed started and injuries let walk ons get in the mix. Compare that to the secondary where we have signed lots of kids and have been very deep over the last few years; I don't think the difference in success on the field is a coincidence.

Trust me, there is some heat. It's not like we just lost three heartbreakers to highly-ranked teams. We hadn't been man-handled in a long time like we were at Iowa. Our offense right now may literally be the worst in the country.

why no heat on JT? he's the one who calls those autrocious plays! he's the one who hired all his under-acheiving assistants! he HAS to be accountable for this...don't give him a free pass because he won a national championship a few years ago!

there are major problems with this team, and it all starts with the man up top.

Coach Tressel isn't going anywhere... sure the media and fans will ride him a bit, but that happens to any major program that loses three games in a row...

We need to focus and bringing in top talent (like we usually do), beating scUM, getting to a bowl (so the younger guys can get more practice time)...

I'm sure JT is harder on himself than the fans are...

The play-calling isn't what's atrocious, it's the OL coaching. As for hiring "underachieving" assistants, didn't he also hire Dantonio as DC? Recall how Dantonio wasn't exactly a defensive guru his first season in the job (2001). He went from giving up over 20 ppg in 2001 to exactly 13 ppg in 2002. Snyder hasn't been doing all that bad so far...it's just hard to coordinate a defense that's dog-tired from being on the field all day after their own offense keeps going three-and-out.

Let's not hijack this thread anymore. Keep it to stuff about TAZ, and nothing else.

I think that an O-line can make an average RB look good, and at the opposing end, A bad O-line can make a good RB look bad. Every player,(all 11 of them) have assignments, and you execute them until the whistle blows. I don't care if you block your man 20 yards down the field. You go until the whistle blows. Execute!

I think tht mili is right, but I think the heat is more in the 'inevitable future.'

What I mean is that the heat will b e felt at the end of the season... I tend to think that Tress is focusing on how to get better now, than he is worrying what people think... so once the end of the season rolls around... regardless of what happens between now and then... JT will evaluate his staff and all those kinds of things then... no point in making a rash decision now.. It will just make things worse.

Also... Coop and Woody and Earle lost 3 games in a row a time or two. JT is here to win... You don't win the big one 5 times by tip toeing through the tulips.
