Southern Cal 69, Washington State 0 (final)

Washington St. might be worst Pac-10 team ever

Here's a scary thought: For Saturday's game against No. 6 USC, Washington State could start a walk-on, redshirt-freshman, fifth-string quarterback who has not thrown a college pass with an offensive line thinned by injuries in front of him.

[...]

The Cougars have been outscored in their four conference games 223-33. One of the two touchdowns against Oregon State was scored by the defense, the second of two touchdowns against Oregon came with 1:19 left and the Cougars' only score against Cal came on a field goal after a four-play drive of minus-4 yards.

Oregon State committed four turnovers to none for Washington State, yet the Beavers, who were 2-3, still won by 53 points.

I'm strugglling here, when was the last time that USC was at least a 40-point favorite against another Pac-10 team, and did they cover in that game? Can anybody help me out?

I think USC actually covers this one. Washington St will have so many three-and-outs SC will likely double them up in TOP and have 13-15 drives. If they only score TDs on half of those possessions that's still ~49 points.

Washington St's two options for QB this week are a guy with "a broken bone in his back" and a fifth-string walk-on.

Average score in Wazzu's six games vs FBS opponents (all losses): 51-10.

Where Wazzu ranks nationally ...

Rushing Offense 111
Passing Offense 94

Total Offense 114
Scoring Offense 116

Total Defense 108
Scoring Defense 117

Net Punting 93
Punt Returns 109
Kickoff Returns 45

Turnover Margin 116
Sacks 115
Tackles For Loss 99
Sacks Allowed 116

This team is awful -- worse than the miserable Virginia team SC hammered in their opener, 52-7.

I just remembered that it might be wise to provide a link to my statement:

SportingNews.com - Your expert source for NCAA Football stats, scores, standings, and blogs from NCAA Football columnists

Football coaches holding campus-wide tryouts in the middle of the season isn't unheard of in college football. It's just usually to look for soccer players who can kick instead of a quarterback.

But Washington State coach Paul Wulff had to resort to a tryout this week to find a scout team quarterback after losing his top two quarterbacks, Kevin Lopina and Gary Rogers, to injuries early in the season.
And the winner is ...
"We actually just picked him this morning. I don't know his name," Wulff said Tuesday. "We went through a series of 29 kids who went through it. He's a good kid. He's a kid from the state of Washington. He's a two-year starter at Woodinville High School."
And he does have a name: Peter Roberts. For now, Roberts will run the scout team as third-stringer Marshall Lobbestael starts and two freshmen backups also get some regular practice time in case they're needed to play.

This somewhat softens the perception that my previous statement made.

USC's Joe McKnight probably won't play Saturday

After posting a career-best 143 yards rushing last week against Arizona State, USC's Joe McKnight will be sidelined for this week's game against Washington State with a toe injury.

Tailback says that toe injury will sideline him for only one game.
