Don't blame him one bit.

NFL Draft scouts raise concerns about South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler during slide to Day 3

The former five-star recruit is still available on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.

After a big run of quarterbacks in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, none were selected on Friday night in either the second or third rounds. South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler remains one of the best available at the position, but there are concerns from NFL scouts, ESPN's Pete Thamel reports.

"It's interesting, I talked to scouts tonight about why we haven't heard Spencer Rattler's name yet, one is there's really no middle class of quarterbacks anymore," Thamel said. "This is the third time in the last seven years we've not heard a quarterback's name in the second round. And then it comes to down to Spencer Rattler's tangibles and intangibles. No one questions Spencer Rattler's arm, but he's just 6 feet tall and he runs a [4.5]-flat 40. And then there's the intangibles about Rattler, especially going back to his days at Oklahoma when he lost the job to Caleb Williams. There's questions about his work ethic, questions about his attitude and you have to ask the question if you draft him: Can you trust him to come in and be a backup?"

Rattler spent the past two seasons as the starting quarterback at South Carolina after transferring from Oklahoma in 2022. He drew positive reviews throughout the Senior Bowl week back in February, turning the heads of media and scouts in attendance. The former five-star recruit competed alongside first-round picks Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr., as well as other NFL Draft hopefuls.

Rattler was named the top quarterback on the American team, an accolade voted on by defensive teammates.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer defended his quarterback on social media Saturday morning.

"Such a tired, lazy narrative. And bull crap," Beamer wrote. "None of the NFL teams that called me said that. And any team that thinks that clearly hasn't done their research He dealt [with] adversity at [Oklahoma] in a class way, came to [South Carolina], was a great player and was voted by his TEAMMATES as a captain ... TWO YEARS IN A ROW. He's a great person, great player and some team is getting a future starter today."

NFL Draft's 2024 best-available Day 3 prospects include Spencer Rattler, Ja'Tavion Sanders

A number of stars are still out there.

SPENCER RATTLER, QB, SOUTH CAROLINA

Spencer Rattler

No quarterbacks went in the second of third rounds, a bit of a surprise considering six of the first 12 picks came at the position. Spencer Rattler is the best available quarterback still on the board for a team in need of assistance. The former five-star signee at Oklahoma who lost his job to eventual No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams spent his final two seasons at South Carolina where he was the Gamecocks' best player. He led the program to wins over nationally-ranked Tennessee and Clemson in 2022 and put up good numbers despite playing behind the SEC's worst offensive line.

Just sayin': I wouldn't draft him expecting him to be QB1; but if you are looking for a QB2 or QB3, and could get him in the later rounds he may be a good "value" pick.

Saints pick Spencer Rattler: Here's why South Carolina QB reportedly fell in the 2024 NFL Draft

Rattler heard his name called in the fifth round

So, why did Rattler fall? NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported that teams question how high Rattler's ceiling is. Could he develop into a legitimate starter, or is he a career backup? Rapoport also brought up the old football reality show Rattler took part in when he was just 17 years old. It did not paint Rattler in the kindest light.

"It is unbelievable how many different teams mentioned to me the image of him in that show, and how they can't get it out of their heads," said Rapoport.
