The 51-year-old Miles, who led Oklahoma State to three straight bowl games, emerged as the top candidate Saturday, after Louisville coach Bobby Petrino withdrew from consideration.

The LSU job opened when Saban took the head coaching job with the Dolphins on Dec. 25.

The school hoped to complete the search quickly to allow the new coach to immediately get involved with recruiting. The process was delayed because the most prominent candidates were in bowl games or in the NFL.

Arkansas football coach Houston Nutt withdrew from consideration on Thursday.

LSU hoped to interview Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio, but the parties involved were apparently unable to set up a meeting.

Miles is 28-21 in four seasons with the Cowboys, who made just one bowl appearance in the 12 seasons before he arrived. His biggest wins came against the Cowboys' instate rival, Oklahoma, in his first two seasons.

"Throughout the football community, Les Miles is extraordinarily well respected," athletic director Skip Bertman said.

On Wednesday, Oklahoma State lost 33-7 to Ohio State in the Alamo Bowl.

Saban had the nation's richest college football contract, a seven-year, $18.45 million deal he signed after winning a share of the national title in 2003. The school is completing a stadium expansion and a new football operations center.

Looked like he was building a very solid program, who are possible replacements? Anyone in the current staff?

It's being said that Mike Gundy (current O-Coordinator) will be the next coach.

I'm not sure if the Cowboys will like that too much.
LSU's new coach lost the respect and admiration of his former players a long time ago. Mike Gundy is the right choice for OSU for many reasons. I am glad to see him as our next head coach.

Check out Justin's piece on all the crap that has gone down: http://www.o-state.com/football/2005/01/03/les-respect

The OSU fans and players have been lied to and betrayed. We thought the old ball coach was somebody we could trust. Mike Gundy is the right man to restore that faith. He has bleed orange from the day he was born. He's "been waiting 22 years for this job." This is his dream job, his "new york yankees job." He has the passion and the determination.

Oklahoma State has been rising up for sometime now. Gundy is the right person to take over. General consensus among eduated OSU fans is that this is the right move for our University. On paper Gundy has no experience as a HC, thats fine. He's going to make up for it with the staff he surrounds himself with and the passion he has for OSU football. I have never been this excited the next football season so early.

We just need to get a game scheduled against LSU and their new coach. 2006 Cotton Bowl? 2007 Fiesta for a rematch with tOSU?

His True Colors

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At some point soon after, members of the team found out about this. When they confronted Miles about what they had heard, an expletive-laced tirade followed. Miles essentially told the team that it wasn’t any of their business, that it was a personal and private matter and to “stay the **** out” of things and fall in line. It was his team and he was going to do things his way
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A true scUMmer - here's hoping he does succeed LLLoyd, given his apparent ability to game plan for tOSU.

You can take the boy out of scUM.....

So sorry to hear that Miles treated you all that way but it will all work out in the end with a true Cowboy running the OrangeShip. It's the same kind of deal here when Tressel was brought in because he was an Ohio man and a former Asst. Coach here, whereas Cooper was an outsider that, for all of the good he did for the program and the gentleman he was, just didn't "get it" when it came to OSU's traditions and history.

I bet Miles has an out clause in his contract for going to the scUM job if it's offered. I would also love to see him take over for LLLoyd. It will be fun to watch what happens at LSU with him there. I say they will fall off a little if not a lot.

"You just learned the hard way Michigan grads are just over grown weasels."

Yeah, no doubt. He really lost a ton of respect with many at OSU.

We knew he'd leave at some point. BUT, he kept stressing how much him and his family loved OSU and Stillwater and loved knowing their family was in such a great small town.

THAT'S what irks us most. Talk to any Oklahoma State student/alum and they'll tell you how great the environment in Stillwater is. And Les said that too. Then he bolted for another school.

He could have stayed here and won 7-10 games a season and be seen as a god. Now he's in Baton Rouge (great family town... lol) and if he doesn't win it all in three or four years, they'll string him up like Florida did to Zook. He gets what he deserves.

And oh, I've heard reports from my sources that Michigan was in talks to offer the job to Miles (the Carr stuff was apparently somewhat true) and that he turned them down.

Also, I was told that he would have taken the Bama job in 2002 if it was offered to him.

Screw him. We've got our golden boy QB running the show and he's putting together a monster staff. It might sting now, but I think Miles leaving is a great thing for OSU.

I think all of the hot coaches say that...I'm pretty sure Urban Meyer said it and EVERYONE knew he was out after this year, hell he probably said the same thing when he was at Bowling Green
