Songs That Saved a Wretch Like Me

You kids stay off my lawn!
The worst band ever thread has certainly gone through some interesting twists and accounting for tastes.

Somehow the conversation turned to music that served no particular purpose than to be light hearted and I moved onto music that acted as balm to wounds.

To me, the first of those would be I Can See Clearly Now. Having gone through divorce (and its long aftermath) I would not wish it even upon a Michigan fan (possibly a Notre Dame fan though). The song came out just as things were being finalized and seemed in its strange, quirky beat and background to understand the devastation I was feeling and showing me a ray of hope.

Other music with strong emotional ties: from Vietnam: standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other soldiers as a Philippine band covered Eric Burden's lyrics, "We gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing we ever do..." We sang along with such heartfelt sincerity, a feeling that came rushing back when the same song was played at a Vet's Day concert close to The Wall a few years back.

I had, among my other duties, the task of being CO of a pirate radio station, KLIK, operating out of the First Infantry Division's base camp at Lai Khe, and the most requested song from the grunts was Country Joe McDonald's Fixin' to Die Rag (with F-I-S-H cheer) followed in close order by Why Don't We Do It In the Road, Sympathy for the Devil, Green Green Grass of Home.

All of those songs hold special meaning to me, brightened dark times and sooth the memories.
