I forwarded the BN post that SusanZ disputed point by point the ESPN allegations to a guy I know in radio up in NE Ohio. His name will remain with me, as I do not want him to receive grief from his comments. I did however find some stuff pretty interesting.
Again, these are the thoughts of a radio host who is/was close to Mo's past....
"I can imagine the uproar that Clarett's comments raised in Columbus!! Likewise here in the Mahoning Valley, since both he and Tressell have deifnite Youngstown ties!
In regards to your e-mail, the writer is pretty much right on . Basically, Reecie is pouting and throwing a temper tantrum because it's starting to dawn on him that he screwed up bigtime by following the advise of his "advisors" in taking on the NCAA, Ohio State, and the NFL. He's realizing that he lost each and every battle with the established institutions and he's trying to justify to himself that it wasn't his fault (in this case, it was Ohio State and Jim Tressel that caused the problems). Om the show, I did a diatribe on Clarrett and concluded it with "On of these days, Maurice is going to mature enough to the point that, when he looks in the mirror, he'll realize that he's seeing the enemy...and the enemy is, you guessed it, Maurice Clarett.
A couple of more notes on Clarett: He did get his rearend beaten to a pulp but it wasn't because he popped off at Korey Stringer's Funeral (I was at that sad event and Clarett never attended the funeral). Rather, he was pounded at a bar in Austintown where he was having a couple of beers with a few former Warren Harding teammates. One of those guys, Rob Massucci, got into an argument with Clarett when Maurice said that the reason that Warren Harding didn't win the State Title in their senior year was because the white ballplayers on that team didn't contribute...that the black players carried the team. Massucci, who is caucasian and quite a ball player in his own right (Air Force Academy), popped Maurice right on the jaw and knocked him out. While he was out cold, one of the managers took a picture of Clarett lying on the floor. That picture can be seen above the bar in Austintown.
Also, that Bobby D guy that the e-mail was talking about is Bobby Delmutti from Warren. Delmutti did pay Clarett during his time at Warren Harding and he's one of the boosters that gave Reecie money while at Ohio State. In fact, after the Fiesta Bowl, Delmutti flew him to Vegas for a couple of days. Delmutti, if you didn't know it, owns Delucia's Restaurant on Elm Road by the bowling alley.
At any rate, Clarett's popping off shouldn't hurt Ohio State. The boosters are the cause of any problems that might be true (if any) and, as long as there isn't any documentation of illegalities, nothing will happen to the Buckeyes.
ESPN is snooping around Youngstown to try to dig something up on Tressel, but they'll have a tough time finding anything- quite a few of his former players have come out publicly (a couple on the show, in fact) and said that Tres was completely above board in his years coaching them.
It's good, though, to see Jim sweat a little bit- it will keep his head on straight!
I found it interesting. More character issues...
