You kids stay off my lawn!
Sorry about the title of the thread. Can't figure out how to make this about stats that startle one as oppossed to bird poop.

I've heard some interesting stats in the last few weeks and I'm not sure exactly what it is that the noise is all about. Perhaps some you, NY Buck for example, could lend some knowledge:

1. Heard on an NPR report, American Productivity is up 74% over the last 20 years, but salaries have only risen about 7% over the same time frame. I understand we measure productivity in a manufacturing model, man hours per end product, but how do we measure productivity in the service, clerical areas? If we are rapidly moving away from manufacturing, how do we understand what "American productivity" is?

2. From today's NPR morning report: In the late 20s stocks were turned over at a rate of 130% per year. Following the depression stocks changed hands at a rate of something like 30%. The current market has been turning over stocks at the staggering rate of 280% per year. Does this not mean that the current market has become something on the order of pyramid scheme, with key investors buying up stocks and products (mortgages) and then flipping them. i.e. far fewer "long haul investments" and more make a quick profit, sell and move on?

I don't know and I wonder if there WAS a conclusion even speculated at, but I DO know who'll get the lion's share of the blame....just because.....
