Some observations watching whales

Watching. Always watching.

Went out to watch the whales this morning and enjoy a fine win.

1. Troy Smith has won the Heisman. Stop all this Quinn nonsense.
  • Brady Quinn, 22/30 217 yds, 3TD, 1INT (vs Army)
  • Troy Smith, 29/41 318 yds, 4TD, 1INT (vs TSUN)
  • Enough said
2. Next year, this team is going to be a rushing powerhouse
  • Having put 79 yds on #1 rush defense Texas (avg 42 yds)
  • We put 182 yds on #2 rush defense TSUN (avg 44 yds)
3. The Rivalry is back.
  • Top kids are going to want to play for Tressel.
  • TSUN is going to get better and continue to attract good recruits, too
  • Power and speed is shifting north of the Mason-Dixon line.
4. Forget Carr. Yesterday, we played a new coaching staff on the other side that we had not seen before.
  • TSUN's offense had some very good wrinkles we had not seen. They made excellent adjustments at the half.
  • Ron English called a good defensive game and made excellent adjustments to shut down our game in the second half.
5. We faced a TSUN team that had every motivation.
  • The Game itself
  • The string of defeats, especially the comeback last year
  • A year of preparation and a new coaching staff
  • The final week with their legendary coach, who dies on the eve of the game.
6. But we still got even for 1969.
  • TSUN did not ruin our national title run.
  • We won
7. Our defense is great
  • Even with TSUN's scoring yesterday, we end up #2 in scoring defense and just .2 behind Va Tech.
  • If Virginia can score 15 or more next week (possibly 14 will do it due to rounding), we will still be #1.
8. We are unlikely to ever witness something like this again in our lifetimes
  • Not only the #1 #2 clash to finish the season with the win
  • Playing three #2 teams in a year
  • Having a basketball team with the possibility of going all the way, too.
9. We are likely to be watching Ohio State play for BCS bowls and NCAA tournament births for a good time to come, as long as we keep these two coaches.

10. It's great to be a Buckeye!

:oh: :osu: :io:

Good post; however, some comments.

I didn't think the rivalry ever went away.

I'm not sure that you can ever "get even" in 2006 for a loss 37 years ago.

Wouldn't it be great to win the National Championship in both sports the same year!!!

The rivalry HAS been back for a couple of years but it WAS gone for awhile, according to scUM fans.
Living in Michigan through the Cooper years, it seemed to get to a point where they weren't excited about playing OSU, and definitely not scared.

When Tressel arrived and started beating them, there was almost disbelief.

Had Michigan won this year, I would have heard so much CRAP, and Tress would have been "only" 4 and 2. 5 and 1 is so much better, so much more dominant.

Great game... three turnovers, none of which were really Troy's fault, and we still beat them.

By the way, how long before that artificial turf gets installed???

What I meant is that it just occurred to me sitting out there this morning that TSUN supporters will stop this nonsense about their 'rivalries' with Notre Dame and Michigan State being bigger than The Game. Or that The Game is bigger to us.

The intensity of The Game did wane during the repeated drubbings of the Cooper years. It is now painfully transparent to us all by their admissions during the past week that TSUN live to win only one game again.

Oh, and forget all this crap about Cal-USC and Auburn-Alabama. Nice games but not The Game.

I do think you can get even. They came into the Shoe yesterday telling themselves that they could win one more for Bo. That they could crush our national championship hopes for him, just like he did in 1969.

For me, yesterday was about 1969. Forget that we were #1 and them #2. In fact, there was only .004 between us in the BCS. Ohio State ended their national championship run. Ohio State ruined their season. And, if need be, in 50 days, Ohio State can do it again.

I agree that scUM's defense played better in the 2nd half, but I don't really think they played that well. If not for 2 unforced turnovers, they may very well have given up another 28. It might sound kind of unsportsmanlike of me, but I would have loved to see us hang 56 on them for good measure.
