You'd think a public university would be off, but you would be wrong. Same, same veterans day.
It all has to do with holidays. We don't have Veterans Day off because that would mean we have to hold class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We don't have Presidents Day off because that would mean we'd have to shorten spring break or Christmas break.
We do, however, have a day off for MLK. I'm cool with that. We should celebrate the civil rights movement and the courage it took to wage the battle against raicsm and discrimination, but I think it says a great deal about our values when we don't also take time out for our veterans and to recognize the leadership of Washington and Lincoln because they don't fit into convienent vacation plans.
