MU's Snyder shaking up coaching staff[/size]

HUNTINGTON -- Shaken, not stirred. It didn't take a James Bond to figure out that's what Snyder, Mark Snyder, would do with Marshall's football coaching staff.
After only one full week as Marshall's new head football coach, Snyder has shaken up the staff with five significant changes.
According to Marshall sources, running backs coach Ernie Purnsley, wide receivers coach Dwayne Nunez, strength and conditioning coach Mike Jenkins and director of football operations Brian Coutras are not being retained by Snyder.
The fifth move involves reassigning veteran linebackers coach Mark Gale to administrative assistant/assistant athletic director duties.
Purnsley, who had been a Marshall assistant coach for nine years, and Nunez, who had been on staff for five seasons, are expected to be replaced by Ohio State products.
Snyder, who was the Buckeyes' defensive coordinator before succeeding Bob Pruett as MU head coach, is expected to name Todd Goebbel as the new wide receivers coach.
Goebbel was Ohio State's quality control coach on defense last season. But the Delaware, Ohio, native also was a three-year starter at quarterback for Kent State. Goebbel finished his collegiate career as the starting quarterback at Northern Iowa.
Purnsley's replacement could be Jared Smith, who served as Ohio State's quality control coach for offense last season. The native of Pittsburg, Kan., was a four-year starter at center for the University of Kansas. But Smith also was the running game coordinator at Fort Scott (Kan.) junior college in 2003.
Jenkins, who has been on Marshall's staff for seven years, also might be replaced by an Ohio State product. Buckeye assistant strength coach Bernardo Amerson reportedly was in Huntington Monday. If Amerson's name sounds familiar it's because he was a linebacker at West Virginia University in 1993-96 and was a three-year letterman.
Coutras, who was Marshall's director of football operations for six years, will be replaced by Gale, who has been a member of the Thundering Herd football staff for 15 years.
Besides assuming Coutras' responsibilities, Gale also will be Snyder's administrative assistant. That will free Snyder to concentrate on coaching and fund-raising. Gale reportedly will retain his current salary, which was $106,160 in 2004.
That move creates an opening for a defensive coach. Snyder is expected to fill that vacancy with former Marshall standout defensive back Shannon Morrison.
That is certain to be a very popular move.
The 33-year-old Morrison played at MU from 1991-94 and was first-team All-Southern Conference in ‘94. Morrison also played on Marshall's 1992 I-AA national championship squad.
After his playing career ended, the Oak Hill native was defensive coordinator at Southeast Missouri State for three seasons under Coach Tim Billings (former Marshall defensive coordinator). Then, Morrison spent the past three seasons as Lehigh University's defensive coordinator.
To make room for Morrison, secondary coach Jimmy Collins could move to linebackers. He previously coached the linebackers at both the University of Florida and Duke.
Unless a member of the remaining staff decides to leave, this appears to be all of Snyder's changes.
