Maybe we should reconsider John L. Smith's actions this week in light of his younger brother's death.

Fresh off a 52-0 loss to Alabama -- and riding an embarrassing two-game losing streak that shattered Arkansas' hopes of contending for the BCS championship -- the Razorbacks interim coach drew ridicule for opening his news conference Monday by telling news reporters to "Smile! SMILE!" Wednesday, USA TODAY Sports reported Smith owed almost $25 million to creditors and had only $500 in his checking account.

According to a release from the school Friday, Smith is attending the funeral of his younger brother Bart, who died Monday -- the same day as Smith's news conference antics, which went viral, and the same day he signed off on new bankruptcy documents. Bart Smith was 53.

I'd say.

John L Smith is a guy who has no filter for what he says. You can't have it both ways: hating political correctness while making fun of guys who just say what's on their minds, hang the consequences.

I'd never want him to coach my team, but I think he'd make a pretty cool (and no doubt entertaining) neighbor. Prayers out to him and his family. And John L, find yourself a better financial advisor, please.

Yeah, maybe I'm getting soft in my old age (insert viagra joke here), but I almost feel bad laughing at the guy now. He was thrown into a shitty situation (think Luke last year, only worse), and has all this other crap going on. Has to be incredibly difficult.

He has other crap going on, but you have to be asleep at the wheel to be a multi-millionaire and still lose your ass on real estate deals in Kentucky. I'm a dumbass with no money and even I know to diversify my portfolio.

I do have sympathy for him though having to bury a sibling. I've done that, and that is rough. Parents and grandparents? OK. You expect that at some point. But brothers/sisters is some next-level misery that is hard to handle.

Couldn't imagine doing that with a job where you don't have the luxury of taking any bereavement leave.

Wow...rough week for John L.

That being said, I bet some higher ups at Arkansas have at least considered pretending this year never happened and bringing back Armin Tamzarian for 2013. I mean Bobby Petrino.

Smith's attempts to boost the spirits of the fan base during his luncheon speech faltered, however, when he mistakenly referred to Arkansas as Alabama - home of the No. 1 team that shut out the Razorbacks 52-0.
"Don't give up on us. It's our program, it's a state of Alabama program,'' Smith said, prompting groans throughout the packed room. "It's not one individual's program.''
When the gaffe was pointed out moments later, Smith responded: "I did? Where would that come from? I've never even heard of Alabama.''
