Maybe they should check the Olentangy for proof...

I saw on the local news where basicly they said they would be on the lookout on overpasses and bridges along the Olentangy for any markings.

I wonder how many police departments track kinds of graffetti, because it could be possible that graffetti would get removed and no one would have ever put the stuff together in the past.

I saw a video that explains the theory a little better. According to the ideas that they have come up with. The killings have not been done by the same person, but instead it is a gang that has different pockets throughout the midwest, and there is a heirachy within each of these gangs.

So in a way it is not a "serial killer" but instead and "serial killer gang" so to speak as the gang goes after and kills only a specific type of person.

It seems like it might be a strech, but honestly I never thought I would read a story about some guy keeping his daugther locked up for 20 years and have 7 kids with her either

I can actually believe a gang, spread out, killing the same kind of person, over and over again. It's a lot of organization but not too hard a stretch. After all, supposedly, to gain entrance to the Crips you have to kill a Blood, and vise versa. I agree, it's not a good way to describe it by using the appellation serial killer, that is a very specific type of killer and gangs just don't fit. Regardless of the sameness of the victims.

I somewhat disagree...many serial killers do leave a kind of "calling card", such as the bow tie, and not simply because it is a pleasurable thing for them to do. Most serial killers are extremely arrogant, and derive some type of sick satisfaction in taunting the fact that they do what they do, and that they get away with it. The killing itself gets them off, but they also want the recognition and "credit" for their "handiwork".

In this situation, I agree that the killers (if this is in fact the work of a gang) would not fit the typical serial killer mold, although there are some parallels.

I guess this is where semantics start to become a problem.

Some serial killers do enjoy the taunting, I totally agree. The Zodiac, The Nightstalker, etc. and therefore they did indeed have a "calling card." This smiley face is very obviously a calling a card, a way of saying, WE DID THIS, YOU CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, HA HA!"

But most serial killers don't want to be caught. They want to go on and on killing. However, due to their particular psychopathy and "ritual" there is something that they ALWAYS do, something that is distinctly "them" in each kill but it isn't always a ....conscious decision. That's what, in profiling, is called a "signature." I guess that's what I was trying to say, if it makes sense.

The drownings that two retired NYPD detectives linked to a serial killing spree they claim has been underway for over a decade, is being questioned by both the FBI and police commish Ray Kelly. Newsday reports that yesterday Kelly stated there is "nothing to suggest" that the two men who drowned in New York were victims of a nationwide network of serial killers who are allegedly responsible for approximately 40 deaths since 1997.
The network, dubbed The Smiley Face Gang, allegedly left smiley faces (pictured) spray-painted near 12 of the bodies, but the two New Yorkers (Lawrence Andrews and Patrick McNeill) were not amongst them, leading Kelly to believe that their deaths were accidental.
The FBI also stated that there is no evidence to support the retired detectives theory, and that "the vast majority of these instances appear to be alcohol-related drownings." All of the victims were described as intelligent, college-aged men, and one commenter speculates that John Pike, Ra Ra Riot's drummer who was found drowned last year, may be one of them.

And another article refuting the theory at FoxNews.

The FBI said there is no proof that dozens of young men who died in mysterious drownings were actually murdered by a nefarious network dubbed the "Smiley Face Gang" ? despite theories held by a group of retired detectives and victims' family members.
Former NYPD detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte revealed their belief this week that the deaths of at least 40 different male victims ? most of them white and college-aged ? in about 10 states appear to be linked.
