Yes, works quite well. I've had one for a couple of years. I don't use it a lot but when I do, I'm REALLY glad I have it.

The only down side is that you'll be in a situation where you are a slave to what they are watching unless you hook up directly to a receiver that they do not use... which may not be a bad thing.

Heck, you could be on to something... a network of co-located of sling boxes.

No, I have ours directly connected to the DTV DVR. With the slingbox I have full control of the DVR as though I had a remote in my hand. The HDMI line off the DVR goes to the amp for switching and the second line from the DVR is input to the slingbox. This means that the slingbox broadcasts only what is coming through the DVR. I could have moved it down stream and pulled the signal off the amp... but then if someone is using the mac mini (for example) to listen to pandora, I'm looking at a computer screen. Conversely, if it's late at night and I'm traveling on business and want to re-watch a tOSU curb stomping of tsun, I can do that and the TV doesn't have to be on at all. I guess I consider both of those good reason to set it up like I did.

I have a slingbox solo. I'm honestly quite happy with the solo. I'm not sure what the HD box would give me beyond what I'm getting.

Hmmm... where'd I get it? Good question. I'm guessing that it was either BBY or Circuit City. I've had it for a few years now. I imagine that you'd be able to find a heck of a deal on ebay by now. When I got mine it was right as the solo was released if that gives you any indication of how long I've had it.
