SI's Ohio State Top 10 Athletes Gallery

It's very impressive when the list doesn't include:

Chic Harley
Orlando Pace
Vic Janowicz
Les Horvath
Jim Parker
Bill Willis
John Havlicek
Paul Warfield
John Hicks
Chris Spielman
Lou Groza
Randy Gradishar
Butch Reynolds
Tom Cousineau
Cris Carter
Jack Tatum

weiskopf us open winner

FYI, Tom Weiskopf won the US Senior Open - but his only win in the 4 majors on the regular golf tour was the '73 British Open at Troon.

I think this is a "feel good" deal by SI. There is only about 6 that would belong on my list. One of the problems in a list like this is picking and choosing. We have had so many great ones as some of you have pointed out and so many great ones not listed yet here.

Like almost all of these kinds of lists, they are aimed at current readers.

As much as I love OSU football and Archie and his two Heismans, he had no where, repeat NOWHERE near the impact on the world of sport that Jesse Owens did. Not only did Owens set records, but he set them when needed, at Big Ten Championships, NCAAs and at the Olympics. Further, his records stood for long periods of time (1935 - 1960 in the case of the long jump) and remained in the top ten of performances for even longer. This despite the improvements in track surfaces, shoes, hell, the use of starting blocks (!) along with increased awareness in nutrition and weight training (and the non-use of performance enhancing drugs).

Havlicek is an incredible gaffe on the list as well as Pace and Jim Parker and hell, while we're at it, why do they call it the Groza Award?

Too centered on today's consumer.

Having athletes like Greg Oden, Blaine Wilson, and Katie Smith ahead of Jack Nicklaus is absolutely stupifying. My top five would be:

1. Jesse Owens
2. Jack Nicklaus
3. Archie Griffin
4. Jerry Lucas
5. Chic Harley

Great minds think alike.

So do we.

IMHO, you gotta have Chic Harley on that list.
- Owens is #1, hands down followed by Archie.
- The Golden Bear should easily be top-5.
- Greg Oden may end up doing more for the University off the court than what he accomplished on it as far as helping Coach Matta turn the program around, but playing only one year, he just doesn't have a spot on that list IMO.
- Orlando was amazing, but many might argue that John Hicks was even better. He was a Heisman runner-up! Jim Parker was no slouch either.

Here is what I found amazing about the top 10 which I did not think they were putting in order because Jesse and Jack should be neck and neck.

1.) Football - Archie Griffin two time Heisman Winner
2.) Men's Basketball- Jerry Lucas past and Greg Oden future
3.) Women's Basketball- Katie Smith
4.) Golf- The Golden Bear
5.) Track - Jesse Owens
6.) Gymnastics - Blaine

Baseball seems to be the only one were lacking in although Swisher is representing OSU well.

Please find another University that can come close to competing with that list truely amazing.

It's just amazing to look at those lists. You could add some pretty amazing phyical specimens such as Alonzo Spellman (I swear his shadow almost reached the C Deck), Perry Carter, and Ricky Dudley. They may have not been world class performers, but they had world class physiques.
