SALT LAKE CITY -- A man with a shotgun fired randomly in a shopping mall Monday night, killing five people and injuring others before he was killed, police said.

Hours later, police still were searching stores for shocked shoppers and employees who were hunkered down awaiting a safe escort from Trolley Square.

"We have six fatalities and multiple victims at hospitals," police Detective Robin Snyder said. "They were found throughout the mall. I don't know male or female or ages."

This is a pretty disturbing story. Maybe I am too normal but I can't understand the mindset that goes into an action like this. Having recently attended a funeral I have a strong realization of the finality that comes with death, that's it, it's done. Something I could never get is taking that away from someone, or inflicting the pain that goes with something like that on other people...

A family friend, who didn't want to be identified, told us Talovic's upbringing may have played a role. He was a Muslim-Bosnian, born in war-torn Bosnia. Talovic has lived in Utah for the past several years. He dropped out of high school in 2004.
