Sheffield Makes Controversial Remarks

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
According to Gary Sheffield, Major League Baseball wants more Latino and fewer African-American players in their ranks.

The veteran Detroit Tigers slugger made several controversial remarks in the June issue of GQ magazine regarding the state of the black ballplayer. Sheffield claimed that declining numbers of African-Americans in MLB can be attributed in large part to the fact that Latinos are "easy to control."
"I called it years ago," Sheffield said, according to GQ. "What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out."

"It's about being able to tell (Latin players) what to do. ... Being able to control them," Sheffield continued. "Where I'm from, you can't control us. You might get a guy to do it that way for a while because he wants to benefit, but in the end he is going to go back to being who he is. And that's a person that you're going to talk to with respect, you're going to talk to like a man. These are the things that my race demands. "So if you're equally good as this Latin player, guess who's going to get sent home? I know a lot of players that are home now can outplay a lot of these guys."

Controversial? I don't really think so.

Saying you don't think gay men should marry because it's not what marriage is supposed to be is controversial
Saying you hate gays (i.e. Tim Hardaway) is just stupid and indicates a stupid mind.

I'd file these remarks as more of the latter, than former.

If he thinks the Latino population can be "controlled", he needs to move to Arizona and find out differently. What a dumbass all the way around. Everyone's entitle to their opinion but I'm tired of the uneducated and ill informed rhetoric made by the people on the podium these days.

So where does Black latino players fit into Gary's equation?

I hope this stupidity from Sheffield gets full attention. If an idiot like Rocker more or less got run out of the league for being an idiot, maybe Sheff should as well....

Rocker got run of the league because he started sucking, not because of his mouth. Remember, long after he ran his mouth, he ended up in Cleveland and got a standing ovation when he made his Indian debut. :roll1:

Would getting paid by the word be a conflict of interest?

Well there's no accounting for the fans there that game.

But seriously, Rocker's comments were the FIRST thing on everyone's mind after he made them.

Shouldn't the same happen to Sheffield? I'd be willing to bet that in a couple weeks no one will hear anything about these comments.

I have no way of assessing whether Sheffield's comments are ludicrous or not, because I have no way of evaluating all of the baseball players in the world and determining who is better than whom. He might be right, but who knows?

Of course, it is an indictment of his entire community if it is true, because he is basically stating that Black Americans are unmanageable and more interested in themselves than the bigger picture of the "team." He basically states that the black man is going to "keep it real" at the expense of making millions of dollars a year.

Well the first thing I'd say is that anyone who gives a blanket judgment of an entire group of people is a knucklehead and then go from there.....

I'd think that Pedro Martinez would have something for Sheff after these comments. And maybe Vlad Guerrero too.....

Pedro will probably never face Shef in a game the rest of his career since they are in different leagues. And Pedro is a bitch, he wants no part of GS. I have a feeling Shef's remarks will soon be forgotten (also he is 3-3 w/ 2 HR's and 5 RBI's tonight so far, only in the 4th inning.) he is still a hell of a player. One of his Latin teammates (Carlos Guillen) commented he is glad Shef made the comments, if he didn't really believe that I think he would have said "no comment". If he isn't offended maybe you should calm down a little too.

I love how blatant racism and stupidity can be brushed aside like this...but ok whatever.....
