Dislocated kneecaps are gruesome, but, as long as it is just the kneecap, it is not an especially serious injury. A kid on our football team dislocated his kneecap in 05, and only missed a week, which was mostly just precautionary. They actually popped his kneecap back in place right on the field.

I think that's a subluxed patella (knee cap). That's usually minor and no big deal.

A dislocated knee is very serious and can only happen if one or more of the knee ligaments have been damaged. that's the injury the Patriots RB had when he was playing beach volleyball.

If you hear "dislocated knee", you know the knee ligaments are torn.

Wasn't that Freddie Mitchell?

I can't remember who it was. The only thing I remember was something happened with his cleats getting caught while being tackled and the way he fell snapped his femur, and his momentum kept moving him forward, and all you saw after that while he was tumbling was his leg flopping around...pretty nasty.

I'm not sure about an UCLA player, but WR Tyrone Prothro of Alabama had a pretty nasty break a year or two ago. He was catching a ball in the endzone, and he landed awkwardly and snapped his leg.

He was also the same guy who had the "play of the year" when he caught the touchdown pass around the back of the defender, and held on.
I remember that, what a terrible injury. That kid was tough.
