Ohio State lands Wright State transfer Tanner Holden (credit 11 Warriors)

Yesterday Ohio State presumably founds its short-term replacement for Branham in Tanner Holden from Wright State. Holden averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as an All-Horizon League performer in 2021-22. He looked really good in the limited games I saw of him.

I went to Wright State for a year before transferring to Ohio State, so I find this pretty cool. Hopefully he enjoys the change of scenery from Beavercreek to Columbus as much as I did. Seems like a really nice pickup and much needed.

The two-time All-Horizon League First Team honoree was one of the biggest names in the transfer portal, and he’s staying in the Buckeye state.

You never know how a transfer is going to pan out, especially when jumping from a lower conference to a higher one. Cedric Russell went from an all-league honoree in the Sun Belt two seasons ago to scoring just four points per game last season at Ohio State. DeVante’ Jones transferred out of the Sun Belt to the Big Ten as well, but continued to average double-digit points per game and essentially clinched Michigan’s NCAA Tournament ticket on his own. You just never know how these things will pan out.

But as far as transfer portal gambles go, Wright State’s Tanner Holden is one of the best bets Chris Holtmann could have made — and he’s about to cash in. Earlier today, Holden announced that he plans on transferring to Ohio State following three very successful seasons in the Horizon League.

While it may be a bit much to expect him to keep up his torrid scoring jumping from the Horizon League, his floor is likely 10 or 11 points per game plus a few rebounds and assists per night. His ceiling may not be 20 points per game in the Big Ten, but he has the stuff to become Ohio State’s first or second option on offense.

He will contribute nearly as much — if not more — than Malaki Branham (13.7 PPG, 3.6 REB, 2.0 AST) did last season, and will most likely slot into Branham’s starting spot, assuming the Big Ten Freshman of the Year stays in the NBA Draft this summer. Holden will likely start at shooting guard while Meechie Johnson or incoming freshman Bruce Thornton runs point. Even with the addition of Holden, Chris Holtmann and Jake Diebler will still be on the hunt for another addition or two over the coming weeks and months.

Make no mistake, those two things do not necessarily offset. Branham could be a lottery pick at 19 years old, winning Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earning third-team all-conference honors in his first year of college basketball. Holden has been a star in the Horizon League for the last two seasons, averaging 20.1 points per game as a junior, but no one is mistaking the competition he has faced on a nightly basis for the challenges he’ll go up against in the Big Ten.

Still, Holden’s ability to score the ball – not to mention his career 53 percent shooting mark from the floor – could go a long way in mitigating the loss of Branham in the Buckeye backcourt, even though the Wheelersburg, Ohio, native is far from a proven commodity at the high-major level.

Just sayin'; I got my hopes up that Russell would fill the void left by Washington, he didn't. No one person is going to fill the void by Branham (who would have very likely significantly improved on his 2021/2022 season numbers too) either.

GET PAID. If y'all wondered just how much NIL opportunities play into recruiting these days, it took Tanner Holden less than 48 hours from becoming a Buckeye to start taking advantage of his NIL, and he explicitly said it was a key factor in his decision.


  1. Good on him for cashing in with the quickness and for his plans to get involved with the community.
  2. He's a sentient recruiting pitch for anyone else looking to do the same thing.
Regardless of how you feel about it, this is the new reality. But the good news is, Ohio State's in a damn good position to take advantage.

Holden is going to be a key player on this team, no matter what happens this season with Sueing. He is versatile, can play and guard multiple positions, including point guard, and can help take some of the burden off of freshman Bruce Thornton.

Holden will play 25 minutes a game or more, maybe starting and maybe coming off the bench. Because of his versatility and his ability to guard multiple positions, Holden is arguably one of the most important transfers in the conference.

I doubt he'll average 25 mpg the whole season. I see a guy whose game roughly resembles a smaller Seth Towns, but lacks the 3-point shooting ability. I think he is a below average defender at the B1G level, and that should keep him on the bench more than 15 minutes on average.

I think Holden was a really good pickup considering all the turnover but agree that if he doesn't improve his defense, he isn't going to be a staple. Hopefully he can improve on defense because his offense is pretty good. Getting solid play from Holden seems pretty important to having a good season, regardless of Towns and Sueing.

I agree he needs to improve his defense and probably his perimeter shooting if he's to see 25 mpg. I think he's a Sueing clone who fits best at the 3 where there is a lot of competition. I'd guess he will be closer to 20 a game on average, more some nights, less others depending on matchups.

Land Grant isn't the best source for basketball insight. I mean if you look at the minutes projected by the guys they've highlighted (freshman and transfers), I think they are already up to like 160 mpg allocated (taking the middle range of all players they've projected) and that doesn't include minutes for Brown, Sueing, Key and Etzler (they reviewed Etzler, said he'd play, but didn't give a guess on minutes). I'd guess those 4 will play at least 60 and maybe as much as 70 mpg.
