He always tells me that if I wanna make money playing this sport, then I'm gonna have to use my athleticism to dunk the basketball,” Gayle said. “It was an amazing experience. Looking over at the bench seeing all my teammates jumping and stuff. Looking around the arena and everybody going wild. It's just those types of energy plays that our team can use once in a while, I'll be more than happy to do so.”

“I was really proud of Roddy. He's put in a lot of work, and he's had Bruce (Thornton) and other guys who have kind of had really big seasons,” Holtmann said. “Obviously, Brice (Sensabaugh) is a freshman, and sometimes you can compare yourself to them, and it can bother you. I think he's just stayed with working. We've had a lot of conversations, and he's just stayed with it, stayed working. I was really happy for Roddy to see this moment because we have a really high-level belief in what he's going to be. We just really do.”

Coming into the season, the expectation for Roddy Gayle Jr. was to learn on the job, but not necessarily in a starting role. As the season progressed, it became evident that he, along with Bruce Thornton and Felix Okpara are the future in Columbus. Thornton already broke through, Okpara has had his moments but this tournament has really elevated how we view Gayle Jr. He’s shooting with confidence, especially beyond the arc as he scored 20 points going 5/6 from three. There are still aspects of his game that need work, ball handing and decision making, but expect some growth in those areas during the offseason. Calling Gayle Jr. a star is a bit premature, but if he continues his growth, it could be happening.

By the end of last season, Roddy Gayle Jr. was the story Ohio State fans were talking about. Highly regarded in the 2022 recruiting cycle, Gayle arrived in Columbus as a top-50 player in the class, with a clear path to playing time if he grew up a bit during his freshman season.
He was inconsistent and unsteady for 90% of his freshman year, but lit the world on fire in the Big Ten Tournament, leaving Ohio State fans — and coaches — wondering what heights Roddy could reach as a sophomore. Is the player who averaged 12 points per game in the conference tournament the Roddy we will get all season, the one who also knocked down 9-of-11 three-pointers during those four games? Or will we see someone closer to the regular season Roddy, who averaged 3.7 points per game through the first 31 games of the season?
Gayle’s progression this year is the biggest variable to keep an eye on as the Buckeyes try to bounce back from a horrendous season that saw them finish in the basement of the Big Ten and miss the NCAA Tournament. A highly effective Roddy Gayle, even if he’s a guy that just earns All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, could expedite the Buckeye bounce-back that the fanbase is demanding.
