SG Katie Smith (All B1G, B1G Champion, All American, OSU HOF, OSU Assistant Coach)

Thought the coach to the left of McDuff on the bench was the coach-in-waiting. There's a pecking order as to who sits where, I surmise. Katie is the only one I see during TO's that goes up to a player and offers advice/tutoring. PS, thought Katie had a period where she was a HC? Maybe Minnesota, or NY? Probably just an interim, but experience all counts.

No she is definitely qualified and there is no pecking order that doesn't have her at the top unless we are as inept asI'm starting to think we are.

Needs to be the Buckeye head coach immediately!!
I love her as a Buckeye icon and overall top-notch human being, but what evidence do you have that she's actually a good coach? Her WNBA head coaching run was spectacularly unsuccessful (17-51 in two seasons with the New York Liberty after Bill Laimbeer had coached them to a 92-78 record with two conference championships in the five years prior) and I can't discern what, if anything either she, or for that matter Jacy Sheldon, is contributing to the current team from the bench

She and Jacy are basically consultants currently. Her understanding of the girls game is what I would put most stock in. McGuff cannot develop a player to save his life. He wins when his athletes are better, faster. He gets destroyed consistently in the paint and if the press isn't working we struggle every time.

The only thing McGuff had been able to do is recruit fantastic guards who've carried the teams. Id wager a grip that Smith would equal or improve that.

When visited tOSU, got chased out of the gym when practice started. My point being, that we don't know what happens in a non-game setting. Would imagine that one coach takes the centers to one basket, forward to another, and guards to yet another to work on their skills etc. Scrimmages should be a reward, and the work-outs should make the games seem easier. Kinda why am surprised that the position coach doesn't take players aside during a TO to remind them what they need to do (in that situation or somesuch). PS, see that in football all the time, the WRs get with Hartline who goes over what needs to happen, etc. But do agree that McGuff recruits GUARDS well. Still am a tad pissed that Dorkas and the other forward both fled after a season in scarlet and gray.

Katie Smith will ring the Victory Bell before Ohio State’s second home football game of the 2026 season.
Ohio State announced Tuesday that Smith, one of the greatest players in OSU women’s basketball history and a current assistant coach for Kevin McGuff’s team, will be the pregame Victory Bell ringer for Saturday’s game against Kent State.
Smith will be the first woman to ring the Victory Bell before an Ohio State football game, a tradition that started last season.
A two-time All-American and three-time Big Ten Player of the Year, Smith led Ohio State to a Big Ten championship and national championship game appearance as a freshman and scored 2,578 points in four seasons as a Buckeye (1992-96), a program record at the time. She went on to become a seven-time WNBA All-Star and two-time WNBA champion, also winning WNBA Finals MVP honors with the Detroit Shock in 2008.
The first female athlete in Ohio State history to have her number retired, Smith was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001. She was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
Smith is now entering her third year as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes after previously coaching for a decade in the WNBA.
