In the second quarter of the Heat's game in Dallas on Saturday, the look on Daequan Cook's face was one of a defeated young player.

Nothing had gone right since he came off the bench, with mindless turnovers and missed shots piling up, and he was barely receiving much consolation from his teammates as he approached the bench during a timeout.

It was a microcosm of his disappointing third season.

It was, at least until he recovered to show signs of recovery. Signs that make you wonder if Cook has finally shaken out of his season-long funk.

Cook finished with 22 points in Saturday's loss to the Mavericks, 17 coming in the game's last 30 minutes, after Cook's horrid start to the game.

It was a welcome sight for coach Erik Spoelstra, who had a conversation with Cook that morning about being more aggressive offensively.

``We met [Saturday] before shootaround,'' Spoesltra said. ``He wanted to be more aggressive. We encourage him. The more he's offensive-minded, things fall into place for him.

``It's interesting, the last three games, he has probably had his best defensive games. So I didn't want him to get down and let his offense affect his defense.''

As much as Cook is known for his three-point shooting ability, being pigeonholed as an outside shooter was the reason for his struggles this season, Cook believes.

So showing off the rest of his offensive skills is crucial to his recovery for what's left of this season.

``It makes me a lot better player,'' Cook said. ``Making plays with the ball in my hands, I'm more comfortable. Whereas if I'm just sitting around, I don't feel like I'm really into the game. When coach says be aggressive, it's not necessarily shooting the ball, it's making plays and making things happen on the offensive end and defensive end.''

Dunbar grad Cook to take break from pros to work with kids in Dayton
Miami Heat star will host third youth hoops camp next week.

DAYTON ? Like many before him, the first time Daequan Cook saw LeBron James it was a memorable moment.

A rising basketball star at Dunbar High School, Cook, then a junior, went to see Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, featuring James, dismantle Alter in what essentially was an exhibition at UD Arena. The game drew a sellout crowd despite a winter snowstorm.

?(Cook) was so excited and so nervous that he wouldn?t even go down and introduce himself,? Dunbar assistant Albert Powell recalled.

?To meet a pro, he understands that this is one of the most exciting things these kids can do.?

Cook long ago graduated to the NBA, just like James would later that year. But that chance close encounter at the arena had a lasting effect on him.

That?s why the Miami Heat shooting guard will host his third annual Daequan Cook Basketball Skills Camp on Monday and Tuesday, June 14-15, at the Dunbar gym.

The camp is for boys and girls grades 3-12. The final day of pre-registration is today, from 8 a.m to 4 p.m., at the high school.

Among Cook?s Heat teammates who have committed to help run the camp are Michael Beasley and former Kansas standout Mario Chalmers.

Kids get life lessons at Daequan Cook basketball camp

During the Memorial Day weekend, Daequan Cook ? the Miami Heat guard from Dunbar High ? was at his place in Coral Gables, Fla., but thinking about coming home to Dayton. He called his mom.

?But there?s times as a mother you?ve got to say, ?Just hold up,? ? Renae Cook said. ?There were a lot things ? crazy things ? going on here.?

She was talking about a five-day span through Memorial Day in which five separate shooting incidents left five dead and three wounded. It was a sobering reminder of last year when Dayton led the state in homicides per capita.

Back in Florida, her 23-year-old son thought a lot about what went on back here that weekend: ?It made me realize why I needed to come back and put on my camp. It?s important to find ways to keep kids out of the streets.?

And Cook did return to Dayton around noon Monday, June 14 ? travel snafus had made him late ? for the first of his two-day basketball camp at Dunbar High.

Dayton native Daequan Cook was at The Beach Waterpark in Mason on Wednesday when he learned he had been traded from the Miami Heat to the Oklahoma City.

After a refreshing day being dipped and dunked on the many attractions there, Cook is ready to make a splash with his new team.

?I think it?s going to be a great fit for me, a good opportunity to play,? Cook said. ?I?m pretty sure Miami put me in a good position (with the trade). ... The Thunder know what type of player I am and will be able to use that.?

Some love to say that Daequan Cook should have spent more time at Ohio State before leaving for the NBA.

They will point to the former Dunbar High School guard?s stats as proof: The former first-round draft pick started three games for the Miami Heat last season and played in 45 overall as his 3-point shooting average sank to 31.7 percent.
