What are our chances?

Very good. The latest report on him at BN basically said he probably would have committed on his visit to columbus had he and his coach not decided to at least check out other places to make sure of his decision.

I would rate our chances above 50% right now.

Apparently Cook's visit with his AAU teammates Greg Oden and Mike Conley went very well. Oden is 7-0 and rated as the #1 center in the class of 2006 by Insiders. Conley is a 6-1 point guard also rated #1 at his position by Insiders. Cook is rated as the best shooting guard in the class of 2006 by Insiders. The three have expressed some interest in attending the same college. The biggest challenge is Oden going pro, although his mother is apparently adamant about him going to college. Conley grew up a Wake Forest fan, but his father mentioned the possibility of the three of them going to school together, and specifically mentioned OSU as a possibility, considering all three visited together during the Cincinnati game.

In regards to that visit, Cook's assistant high school coach said "In fact, I think if Daequan was permitted to do so, he might have made the decision right there on the spot...he really had a great time."

I'd say he are definitely in the driver's seat now for Cook, and hopefully he can convince at least Conley to come along with him, if not Oden as well.

Clemente committed to Miami, which is not a total shock. It seems that Matta has cooled on anyone else in this class that is not either a) a solid big man or b) a bonafide superstar. It seems Hererra, Bell, Chandler, CDR, and Mayes JUCO teammate, whose name escapes me, are the only serious targets left in this class. I think the staff would like to shore this thing up soon so they can get to work on Conley, Oden, Lighty, Cook, Semaru, etc...

I wonder if Herrera is still 90% sure of going to osu like he stated some time ago. My guess is that Matta is going to try and get all of his recruits in the early signing period, because the class of 2006 is far more vital to osu. It is probably going to be a situation of first come, first serve between herrera, bell, CDR, and Chandler.

as for 2006, cook is the primary domino. if matta can get him on board early, it could trigger some great things.

tsteele - I couldn't agree more...I think Matt definitely wants to get this class wrapped up during the early signing period to focus on 2006. And you are also right that Cook coming on board could start a domino effect unlike anything tOSU men's basketball has seen before. I'm talking second coming of the Fab 5 effect, only it would be the Fab 3 of Oden, Conley, and Cook. The thought of those three plus Terwilliger, Butler, Mayes, Lewis, Harris (provided he lives up to any of the hype), and Jackson-Wilson and possibly Lawrence Wilson is scary. I think we are knocking on the door of some huge things for this program...

It will be hard to convince Oden to forgo the NBA draft for at least one season of college ball. His mom wants him to go to school very badly, but once she sees the number of 0's that his projected draft status brings, she may rethink it.

No doubt...I'm all for kids going to school too, and I can understand her position. But when agents start talking numbers, her next thought might be that her baby needs to get paid...

By Jeff Rapp...Cook checks in at 6-4 185 lbs. He is currently ranked as the #3 junior in the country behind AAU teammate Greg Oden and Brandan Wright of Brentwood Academy. Cook says OSU is at the top of his list, along with UNC and Wake. He was losing interest in OSU when O'Brien was still here, but Coach Matta moving to Columbus got him interested again. He likes the facilities and the proximity. He prefers to play the 2 or the 3.
