9. William Buford, Libbey ‘08 (36 points): Few played the game with more joy and fewer played it better. The most gifted talent to come through Toledo in a generation, Buford, a 6-5 guard, could score in his sleep from the time he first took the court as a freshman starter for the Cowboys, and developed into an all-around force. His senior year, he averaged 23.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists, leading Libbey to the Div. II state championship game.

Buford was named Ohio Mr. Basketball and a McDonald’s All-American before heading to Ohio State, where he kept the Glass-to-the-Capital-City pipeline flowing. A central part of the modern heyday of Buckeyes basketball — playing for teams that went 116-30 during his career (2008-2012) — he left Columbus tied for third with Hall of Famer Jerry Lucas on the school’s all-time scoring list (1,990 points).

Former Ohio State standout William Buford received his degree on Sunday, officially becoming an Ohio State graduate.

Buford, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, earned his degree in African American studies and walked as part of the 2025 graduating class.

Former Ohio State Guard William Buford Joins Jake Diebler’s Staff​

Jake Diebler has added an Ohio State basketball legend to his staff.

Diebler announced Monday that former Buckeye guard William Buford will join the program as a program assistant. He played at Ohio State from 2008-12 before spending the next 14 years playing professionally overseas.

William Buford joined Jake Diebler’s staff in May of 2026 as a program analyst.

The Toledo, Ohio native was a four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes from 2009-12 and earned All-Big Ten honors three times. He finished his career as the No. 3 all-time leading scorer in program history, matching legend Jerry Lucas with 1,990 career points. Buford was part of three Big Ten Championship teams and was a member of the 2012 NCAA Final Four team.

Buford was one of the best scorers in program history as he is one of just four Buckeyes to score 500 or more points in a season three times, joining Jerry Lucas, Michael Redd and Bruce Thornton. He made 215 career 3-pointers, which is fourth-most in program history.

Following his collegiate career, Buford went on to play professionally for the better part of 12 seasons. He finished his degree in African American studies in May of 2025.

Buford attended Libbey High School in Toledo where during his senior season, he averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds per game, was named Ohio Mr. Basketball and he participated in the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
