Student-Released Fowl Close School

FORT KENT, Maine (AP) - Six high school seniors in Fort Kent were charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief after a class prank went awry and ended up shutting down the school.

The six boys ordered 10 goslings and 45 chicks from an Indiana company and then set them loose in Community High School early Thursday morning, school officials said.

The pranksters put the birds in the school gym, in classrooms, in lockers, in offices and into a drawer of a teacher's desk, said Principal Tim Doak. But the animals left their mark on floors, chairs and tables, forcing administrators to cancel school Thursday and Friday to clean up the mess.

The school will expect full restitution for cleanup costs, which are expected to run into the thousands of dollars, said Sandra Bernstein, superintendent of School Administrative District 27. The canceled days will be added to the end of the school year.

"It's comical when you start thinking of chickens in your school, but it's just another chapter in the book of school administration," Doak said.

A teacher discovered the intruders before 6 a.m. after entering the building and hearing the birds running around the hallways, Bernstein said. When students arrived, they were taken to the school gym, which had been sterilized, before being sent home.

A crew of about 10 was enlisted to clean and disinfect all surfaces where the birds left a mess - about 70 percent of the school. The birds pose a public safety hazard because of salmonella bacteria, Bernstein said.

"It's not funny when it's a public health risk," she said. "Salmonella is a very dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly with anyone vulnerable or with immune system problems."

The animals, none of which were harmed, were boxed up and taken to the police chief's house, where they were expected to stay until they find new homes.

A court date has not been set and the incident is still under investigation, said Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud.

TeddyK, pranks can be fun, but let's face it, most of the time someone is going to be stupid and go too far. Disrespectful attitudes towards teachers or administrators are never acceptable. Any actions that show disrespect to authority figures are not clever, rather a sign of immaturity.

Have fun, but use good judgement.

There were a few my year. The first on was each class was assisned a different part of the outside of the school that you were suppose to take care up, weeding it, planting flowers etc. Well the group from my class that was in charge of ours when they planted the bulbs planted them to count out 1994. There ended up hanging from teh side of the building all the under classmen girls who were "sluts", and someone let a greased pig go in the hallway.

MIT 'hacks' mark Sept. 11 with a fake fire truck

By Andrew Ryan, Globe Correspondent
In what may be an only-at-MIT Sept.11 tribute, a fake fire truck appeared this morning on top school's Great Dome, the site of storied student pranks since at least the 1960s.

From the ground, the vehicle appeared to be the old fashioned cab of a truck that has been painted red. The cab is attached to a rectangular box, which is also red, and has the words "MIT Fire Department" painted on the side in bold white letters. A coiled roped dangled from the side of the "truck," completing the emergency vehicle look.

The Great Dome is a 150-foot high rotunda that dominates the skyline of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. It has been the site of other notable pranks -- known on campus as "hacks" -- including a 45-foot replica of the Wright brothers' biplane on the 100th anniversary of flight in December 2003.

Perhaps the most famous prank came in 1994 when what looked like a real MIT campus police cruiser appeared on top of the Great Dome, complete with flashing lights and a box of donuts in the front seat. The car, numbered "pi," had a sign in the back window that read: "I brake for donuts."

School officials declined to discuss today's fire truck, but said they can only assume it was a nod to the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11. MIT does not have its own fire trucks.

In the past, the school has not punished hackers. When the Wright brothers' biplane appeared, six students were spotted leaving the building at about 6 a.m. Not only were they not arrested, but an officer helped one retrieve a forgotten laptop.

This morning a spokeswoman for school noted that the objects have always been safely placed ? and removed ? from the Great Dome. Other objects that have appeared include a telephone booth in 1982; a fiberglass steer from the Hilltop Steak House in Saugus in 1979; and a giant wood screw in 1977.

The logo portrayed Mens Et Manus dressed as firemen and bore the phrase "Meminimus" which translates to "We Remember". The red light on top of the cab rotated and flashed at night.

Can't believe I missed this thread when it first hit.

This wasn't our senior prank but it was just for fun we had a big wheel race from our parking lot through the hallways of the school back out to the parking lot. Gotta love trying to ride a kid's big wheel when you are 6'0 250 lbs. Some classic stuff.

But the prank that we had planned but someone beat us to it. The McDonalds a block away from our school was celebrating its 25th anniversary and had this huge Ronald Balloon sitting on top of it. We had it set with a few employees who were seniors that we were going to take the balloon and then inflate it in the cafeteria an hour or so before school started.

But the week before we were going to do it someone else stole it. Bastards ruined a potentially great prank.
