'Semper Fi: Always Faithful' Camp Lejeune water contamination documentary (2/24 10pm)

Clarity thanks for the link and the discussion.

To the best of my knowledge none of my friends have any service related problems stemming from being at LeJeune.

On the other hand a family member was part of a lawsuit against the US government over illnesses stemming from poor handling of hazardous materials at a classified facility so I have some idea of that insane loops that must be traversed in finding satisfaction for some of these issues.

The Lejeune exposures would have been 'limited' to the main family housing areas (Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point, though I've heard mention of Midway Park, Berkeley Manor, Paradise Point, Hospital Point, and Watkins Village) from around 1960-1985, with the worst of it being in the early 70s. If you have friends born on/in Lejeune during that period, they should be getting rigorously and routinely checked over for cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Yeah, I have a lot to say about that. I'll limit it to saying that laws written to shield the government from the judiciary in tort cases is sort of outrageous. But, again, not being a lawyer maybe I just don't "get it".

If you read the case I cited about, it actually talks in some detail about that exception, and its intended purpose -- which was an unapologetic proactive get-out-of-jail(trouble)-free card for governmental wrongdoing.

I may very well check it out. Sometimes it's hard for me to decipher for law-speak. The whole thing is a disgusting shame. I hope the upcoming show gets some press on the matter.

The Marine brats I grew up around were primarily kids of a Winger, so Cherry Point & Memphis is where they spent most of their time (with a couple of years in Poughkeepsie NY).

I spent more time in Havelock growing up than I ever did in Jacksonville while I was on active duty (thank god).

H.R.1742 -- Janey Ensminger Act
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:H.R.1742.IH:

Jerry Ensminger is a hell of a Marine, don't know what else to say about the guy.

Don't know what else to say about the doc either. I didn't learn anything new, but then I'm neck deep in this stuff and have been for years. Hopefully others find it informative without being unnecessarily sensational.

Either way, more exposure and knowledge as good. My own doctors just don't know how to help me, don't know what to do, and so for the most part we just don't bother anymore. The hope is (for a lot of people like me, kids born at the naval hospital and lived in family housing) that in time it will be better understood and better documented so all the different ways the damage manifest in different folks can be properly treated.

Anyway, thanks all around for the interest.

They did some interesting things on military bases years ago. About the time I started first grade, we lived in military housing in Virginia. One of the really fun things for us kids to do in the summer was to run behind the jeeps that would drive down our street from time to time. The guys driving the jeeps never seemed to think anything of it, and I have no memory of them ever telling us to stop or get away.

Oh, yeah...what made it really fun to do? We were running & twirling about in the very exotic gray fog emanating from the back of the jeep, as they sprayed the compound for mosquitos with DDT.

There are so many reasons it's surprising to me that I'm still alive. That's just one of them.

When I lived on base housing at Hickam from Mar '86 to 'Jul 87, there was about 5-6 times they had drove around the housing area fogging the area with insect repellant. We had to close the doors and windows for about an hour after they went through the area it was so bad.

My dad was stationed at Lejeune in the late 50's-early 60's, before I was born. My two older brothers and my sister were there with my mom. I passed along the information to them to see if they remember where they lived on base.
