Search Buckeyeplanet from the comfort of your browser's search bar

I had a few spare minutes at work today. During that time, I ran across something in the documentation in our bug tracker and it led me on a bit of a trail. Anyway, I ended up with a custom search option for our bug tracker for both Firefox and IE7 search boxes. It's pretty cool. The Firefox one is a basic XML file and the IE7 one is a registry add/hack/edit.

Obviously I was not going to stop there. It was easy to convert them into tools for Buckeyplanet searches from the search bar. It's a little cheating in that it only uses Google's "Site:www.buckeyeplanet" operator, but still, it's the convenience factor. Plus it is a darn good search of the site without the annoying 20 second wait.

Instructions for installation:

Firefox:
Download the attached BP.xml.txt. Change the extension from .xml.txt to .xml (so you should have BP.xml). Put the BP.xml in this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxx.default\searchplugins (searchplugins is one word, but the string is too long for this forum to handle) (If there is more than one xxxx.default folders, then it is up to you to figure out which is really your default profile, sorry). Then restart Firefox and it should be an option in your search bar. You can even edit your search bar preferences and make it your default.

Internet Explorer (7 only):
For Internet Explorer, READ THIS FIRST: Although this is a relatively safe operation, I am obliged to let you know that messing with the Windows registry can corrupt your Windows install. Only do this if you know what you are doing and are willing to take that risk. Running unknown registry files is never advised. Always make sure you know and trust the source. Please take the minute it takes to read this file (right click and select EDIT) to make sure for yourself that it is clean. (If you do not trust me and/or the registry file, then just use the Firefox one. You should be using Firefox anyway :wink2:).

Download the attached BP.reg.txt. Change the extension from .reg.txt to .reg (so you should have BP.reg). (Please go ahead and exam it if you do not trust it. I would examine any .reg file that I put on my computer) It is very similar to the above file, except IE7 only uses the registry for its settings, so it is the only way to do this. Double click on BP.reg, tell the prompt that yes, you do want to add it to your registry, then restart IE7. The search provider will be in the search bar. You can make this one your default (if you wish) through the IE7 search bar options.

Enjoy
