Is Pete gaining a rep among recruits?

"I called coach Carroll and coach Tressel and they had different reactions. Coach Carroll was disappointed and said he thought I was making a mistake. Coach Tressel, you could tell he was for real, he was disappointed and wished me the best and told me I could always change my mind. I thought about it for a second, but I'm going to West Virginia."

that's pretty lame, coming right out and telling a kid he made a mistake. sounds like what the scUM coach said to Robbie Schoenhoft.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Found this mildly interesting... take it for what it's worth.

(I decided not to post this in the recruiting forum for what should be obvious reasons, if it's better suited there, feel free to move it. Thanks)

That topic caused a serious war on BN...

Out of respect for the USC guys, I would just ask everyone to remember that we ask people to give JT and tOSU the benefit of the doubt in our situation. We have no idea of the context of this conversation...the easy answer is to crack on PC, the better answer is to realize we don't know very much of this situation.

As 5Star said on BN, maybe its best if we focused on how well JT handled the situation.

Nice double post, toothless.... point taken, no less.

Certainly not trying to bring on a USC v. OSU war message board war. I suppose I could have thought through the title of the thread a little better. My point was more along the lines of giving some honest consideration to the reputations of a coach where recruiting is concerned.

I don't think Pete's a bad guy. I do think that he is prone to telling a recruit one thing, and then doing another. I also think he's prone to this type of reaction - the one JG is quoted as saying Pete had. In terms of recruiting, when does this type of info become "common knowledge" and begin to impact recruiting, ya know?

USC guys, Tressell is surely no perfect saint either. Dennis Kennedy, anyone? Maybe it's a non-issue entirely. Still thought the original post as I quoted it was a good "talking point" which could be honestly discussed here on the planet where Bustnuts apparently failed.

I'm with ya BKB...

As WStripes said on BN and on this site, Jason Gwaltney played games throughout his recruiting and even blatantly lied in certain situations.

For JG to tell USC he is coming as long as they do not recruit another back, then commit elsewhere is bogus. We would be calling for a kid's head if he did that to us.

There is much more to the conversation than what JG is letting on...and why exactly should his version be believed this time?

Nice thing that coaches have going for them is the same thing that administrators haev going for them... transient populations.

Any effect these kinds of things have only make it maybe to the next class....

14 year old football players aren't recruiting junkies... their parents aren't recruiting junkies... the USC prospect of 2007 or 08 has no idea that this just went down... hell, they don't even know they are prospects yet for the most part.... also... the comment is coming from a guy who didn't even go to USC.

What is going to be the impact of a kid from NY who went to WV who thinks Pete's a bit of a shiester... Might not get the next great Long Island Kid? Probably not going to be the end of the world.

Same thing with Dennis Kennedy, I was disappointed for Dennis, and I was a bit upset considering the recruiting base in his area... but for the most part, the next kid is going to think that he's a better player than Dennis or whatever else...

Good points.

In my mind, and maybe it's because I only started following recruiting 3 or 4 years ago - at least following it fairly closely anyway - it's hard to know how many recruiting junkies there are out there. I mean, in 1989 I wouldn't think the "unpublisized" treatment of any one recruit would make a difference in 1990 and subsequent years. But, it seems to me that recruiting has really taken off - in terms of the causual fan's interest. If that's true, I suspect that HS football players are more prone to follow this kind of thing as well. Maybe not.

In any case, I did over look that JG shafted Pete by leading him on and now USC having landed no TB 2 years in a row. (It is 2 years right?)

Pete's pretty nimble and I hear Jim is prone to dropping his hands when he gets winded.

As far as the alleged comment, I could hear him saying that if it is true true that Jason had said he was going to USC as recently as the night before. Whether he means Jason is making a mistake in what school he is going to or whether he means Jason is making a mistake in breaking promises, I guess that depends on how much you like Pete Carroll to begin with. No way in knowing, really.

I hate to even bring this up... but why believe what JG said? JC might have said something different but JG is paraphrasing. From all accounts he all and out lied to the other 2 colleges that were persuing him. To me it seems like JG loved the attention he was getting when USC & OSU were recruiting him, and with 2 powerhouse college going for him his recruiting ranking shot up as well as press following him.

So he milked it for all it was worth. In the end I am now glad he didn't choose OSU. Time to look forward to the running backs that are already here and the incoming guys for this year. Afterall, this is not the end of the world, nor will it affect us in the future, we will just move on to the next guys next year and start the cycle of life again (key Disney music)

First thing is... if there are any prospective Buckeyes for the clas of '07 readign this board... please take my advice and get back to your studies and be sure to hit the weight room on the way home. :wink2:

Second thing is, if they really follow it... they know that for every Dennis Kennedy and Jason Gwaltney there are 40 other Ted Ginn's and Matt Leinarts, etc.

Anyway... stripes... sorry we got one of your RB's and WV got the other. Who knew that being Richie's #1 guy was going to be such a big deal?

As far as breaking promises go... his mistake (presumably)was making two promises he couldn't keep.... one was gonna get broken. Too bad....

Kbuck, while it's true that the kids should be studying and in the weight room, it's a little shortsighted to think that they are.

And, actually, you talk about studying and such. Is it unwise, in your view, to study up on the process that is happening to you (if you're being recruited, that is) I think I would want to know, if I'm gonna spend 4 years of my life in some far away land (think Boliva) I'm gonna make sure I know what's going on around there. Everyone gets "wowed" when they go on visits, so I'd like to know what the real story is. I'm not sure that all these internet message boards are the best of sources, but they are a source of that kind of info no less.

But, then, on the other hand, I can't think of any coach who has a bad reputation such that his recruiting classes suffer. So, maybe it really is a non-issue.

Its a school day isn't it? :wink2: (How many more winks do you want me to put up, "Mr. I'll call AKAK shortsighted?"... I should ding you just for missing that. :) )

Oh- there are plenty of them. The ones with a lot of "L's" next to their names.

Winning cures all ills, in recruiting too.

But every recruit is an individual case... and as with Tressel, Petey, Mack Brown and whoever else... the good stories are the rule. Heck... Alabama still gets big time players now and again, and we're worrying about an offhand comment Jason Gwaltney made about Petey?

Recruiting World vs Real World

In reference to JG comments about his conversation he had with PC and what was said, I would have to believe there is more to the conversation but I also believe the words "your making a mistake" were made by PC, but in what context and what was the meaning will never be known.

In the world of recruiting, promises are made and broken by the school and recruit, its a dirty business sometimes, read about the Albert Means story, I think those types of things go on at alot of schools. It happens in the real world also, people make decisions that effect other people and life goes on.

I believe Alan will back me up when I say that alot of schools lie to recruits and vice versa, its the way of the world. At the end of the day, only one school will be happy. Its unfortunate in JG's situation that he verbaled to all three schools at one point or another and "made his bed" so to speak. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying JG did anything wrong or misled the coaches but when you give strong indications you are going to sign with a school and do not less than 24 hours later, well I can just imagine how the coaches feel after all the effort is made to land a recruit.

I think the comments made by JG were not entirely accurate but gave us a glimpse of what happens on signing day. I am very proud of how JT apparently handled the news according to JG. I personally try not to forget how difficult it must be for a 17-18 year old kid to tell these great coaches no.
