Here's a link to a bunch of books, mostly con but not all I think, about Scientology, from Scientologists.

Here's a link to a site with lots of info about Scientology, but it's skewed because it's former "kid scientologists", people reared in the "belief."

So do they let you know up front it's scientology they're trying to get you interested in or are they more subtle about it?

That I can't tell you for sure, I don't have personal experience, but I have read of other's experiences and it seems to depend on how you are approached first. They are a secretive bunch, always have been.

They don't come to your house a-knocking, like some Baptists and the JWs do.

The founder sat around with his buddies and talked about the real money was in religion. The goofs who now follow it are simply idiots who needed something in their lives and found it in Scientology. While I do not begrudge them that solice, if they get it, from their practice, to ignore the way the thing was founded is nuts and intellectually dishonest. If a Christian you have to take what happened two thousand years ago by faith by virtue of the temporal disconnect, but when it happened in your lifetime you cannot ignore it.

Year ago I got on their website because I wanted to know what the heck they believed in. It was all very cryptic and you really couldn't find anything out back then without buying the book. Now it looks like their is some actually info out there, but I still don't get it. Don't you get more "enlightened" the more money you give or something wierd like that?

Does anyone know if they even believe in God?

Just curious. I looked at the website and I can't make much out of it.

It is cryptic for a reason. Much of their inner core of "beliefs" is supposed to inner circle information only, and it used to be guarded even more jealously than it is now. It isn't enlightenment per say, it a "state of Clear" that you gain further levels in as you go. And yes, each cycle of learning that go through to get "clear" costs you money. It is considered a donation but you can't keep climbing the Bridge unless you pay. They are courses of study and you buy the materials.

For a pretty decent, con but with knowledge and not a lot of total bitterness, tale of ascending the Bridge, read some of the books by Margery Wakefield. She is a former Scientologist from back when it was still run by Hubbard and new. You can find the book at the first link I posted.

There are now, thanks to "Anonymous", a whole slew of older, internal, documents and courses of study available online. While some growing and adjustment has been made over the years, the essential infomation hasn't changed. Look online for "SecretDox.rar", it's all over the web now.

It's also very interesting to just research and read about L.Ron Hubbard himself, his life, his works, his lies to himself and others. You know the old saying, "It may not be true but it's a damn good story!"? That describes the Old Man to a T.

You have to remember to take into account that people yearn for beliefs. They yearn for someone to make sense of it all for them. If they find someone they are convinced can do that, they willingly believe what may otherwise seem to be ridiculous and insane. Poison Koolaid(Jim Jones), a Mothership coming in a comet to take them away(Heaven's Gate), a physical reincarnation of God himself that happens to NEED to have sex with their wives and daughters(David Koresh), as a few examples.

"Fuck L. Ron Hubbard, fuck all his clones..."

The alternative metal band Tool has voiced criticism of Scientology. After releasing their first full-length album Undertow in 1993, the band began touring to promote their new work. In May 1993, Tool was scheduled to play the Garden Pavilion in Hollywood but learned at the last minute that the Garden Pavilion belonged to the Church of Scientology, which the band felt clashed with "the band's ethics about how a person should not follow a belief system that constricts their development as a human being".[18] The band's vocalist Maynard James Keenan recalled that he "spent most of the show baa-ing like a sheep at the audience".[19] Scott Schalin reported in Bay Area Music: "Between songs, Keenan, staring first at the lush grounds paid for by devoted L. Ron followers and then into the eyes of his own audience, bayed into the mic like a sheep looking for his shepherd's gate. "Baaaaa! Baaaaa!" the singer bleated."[20] The lyrics to the Tool song "?nema" contain the phrase: "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard, Fuck all his clones."

Scientology in popular culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just another reason that Tool is awesome.

Oh, yeah, if anyone does happen to decide to read some Scientology stuff, you will need this dictionary. Hubbard made up a lot of completely new terms.

When reading Margery's stuff I referred to this often. Otherwise, it was impossible. Besides, one of Scientology's beliefs is, if you don't understand something it's because along the way there was a word you didn't process(an M/U, misunderstood word) and until you completely understand it, you cannot internalize and understand anything else. Go back and find that word and realize it to yourself.

Here's a link to the glossary from the official site.

Well I know this is probably a whole other topic, but speaking of these rich, powerful people and religion...the "Church of Oprah" is frightening as well if you ask me.

Have you guys heard about this new movement that Oprah has hopped on? People love her worldwide and she's really pushing this stuff.
