This guy's a real jerk
This is my last year at my school doing the science fair and I wanted to make it a great one and I picked out my topic.

I will create a ranking system similiar to the BCS based on rankings in the AP Poll, USA Today poll, the Buckeyeplanet poll (I want to include what the fans think), and Strength of schedule. I will use all of the teams included in all three polls and the teams that received votes. To determine the strength of schedule, I will combine the team's opponent's records and translate it into a winning percentage. The higher the winning percentage, the higher the team is in the winning percentage rankings. I will average the team's position in all three polls and the strength of schedule rankings. The lower the ranking average is to one, the better rank the team gets. The top 25 teams with the best rankings will be the teams included in the final poll. I will do this when the regular season is complete and will use the same bowl criteria as the BCS. If there is a tie between teams in their final ranking the tiebreaker will be based on a head-to-head matchup during the season, if the two teams have not played each other the tiebreaker will go to the team that faired better in conference play.

Tell me what you think.

If anyone has any suggestions please comment!

I would first run it by your teacher and ask them if it is a good project.

What will your hypothesis be?

Totally agree.

Your experiment needs to be as bias free as possible.

Why?

I mean... if he's just trying to show possible methodologies... it doesn't matter...

On the other hand... he's be best off using other "fan polls" too... or as many as he can find...

If he's using the AP and USA today poll... the individual voters in those polls are biased as well... they're just less biased toward one team, presumabely.

At any rate...

For ideas, I'd do some research on the BCS moethodology and the Sagarin rankings...

What I'd do... is... Throw the BCS ratings out... and recrunch the numbers that it uses differently than they do... add more "polls" and rankings in... and come up wth an alternative "BCS" rating system and explain why yours might be better.

How is your project "science" related? I always did a science fair project based on either Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science or Engineering. It seems to me it's more of a math/statistics kind of project which is fine but it seems it falls more out of scope in my mind.

Of course, I've been out of high school for over 20 years so perhaps it's different now. . . heh.
