Schutt Football helmet

Another thing, is there some sort of contract with certain teams? For instance, you see tons of PSU players wearing this modern style helmet:

Those are the Schutt DNA. They're brand new. I don't think all schools have subscribed to them. They are extremely comfortable, I wore one last season. However, the eye shields don't fit them so if a player wears one (i.e. Santonio Holmes, Troy Smith) it isn't a DNA.

Schlegel is wearing the Schutt Air I believe. Just like shoe contratcs, the school prefers players to wear a certain product. However, if a player prefers another type they will sometimes accomodate. Don't get me wrong, most players aren't going to make a big stink about shoes or undergear. However, helmets are one thing schools are lax with rules. In almost all circumstance a player will have a say in his helmet (most frosh just take what they're given).

Riddell has the contract for most big college teams, PSU and Tenn. being notable exceptions. We use Riddell at our school, but if a kid wants to pay for a Schutt themselves, they are more than welcome. The revolutions are far easier to fix than the old Riddells.

At my school we have both regular Riddell's and Revolutions. There is a reason for it too, some players heads don't fit one or the other helmet right.

This year(At the beggining of the season) and last year I had to wear a Revolution, because the regular helmet wouldn't fit right. We have about 100 helmets and I would say it is a 80/20 ratio of regular to revolution in our helmets.

Revolutions are alot more expensive though, one player was shocked when he found out that when he lost his $145 Revolution Helmet...that he would have to pay $145.

This year we got a helmet from Schutt that had the new air padding system in it. I thought it was a "dummy" helmet that was just for show, but no the coaches insisted that it was real. It was extremely light and the padding(underneath the air pads) was like styrofoam.

Needless to say, none of the players wanted to wear it.
