KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Quarterback Brent Schaeffer is leaving Tennessee after being suspended from the team this month following his arrest.

Schaeffer, who would have been a sophomore this fall, will leave school at the end of the spring semester. He had been charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a dormitory fight with a student.

Coach Phillip Fulmer said Friday the decision was a "mutual agreement" in "everyone's best interest." Schaeffer's family in Florida declined to comment and the player could not immediately be reached.

Schaeffer and fellow freshman Erik Ainge vied for the starting job last year but both were injured and didn't finish the season. Schaeffer broke his collarbone in a game at South Carolina in October.

He became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a Southeastern Conference opener since 1945. He started the next two games before Ainge took over, but then Ainge separated his shoulder. Rick Clausen finished the season as the starter.

All three were to compete for the starting job this spring until Schaeffer was suspended.

Schaeffer, fast and elusive, finished the season 18-of-37 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 33 times for one touchdown.

Schaeffer and receiver Bret Smith were arrested April 10. Part of Schaeffer's involvement was caught on tape by a video camera in the dorm lobby. A police report said Schaeffer picked up Quantavios Emerson, who had been arguing with Schaeffer's girlfriend about a cell phone, threw him to the floor, then hit Emerson while he was down.

Eleven Tennessee football players have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004.

A lot of non Division-1A schools will be after this guy.

Too bad Doug Williams isn't at Grambling anymore. He could have held up a jersey with SCHAEFFER on it.

Is it possible to transfer from one D-1A school to another?

This kid seems like a player, and if you look at his offense, he was just defending his girlfriend. (well... alledgedly. coulda been much worse, but on the surface, it appears pretty non-serious).

Yes, but he'd have to sit out a year. NCAA rule to limit frequent jumping.

Within the Big-10, transfers aren't offered scholarships if the athlete goes from one Big-10 school to another. Hence, John Kerr came over from Indiana but he has to pay his own way at tOSU.

Speaking of which... is John Kerr still on the team?

In pondering his future I wonder if Iowa will cross his mind. He is the cousin of ex- Hawkeye Quarterback and Heisman Runner-Up Brad Banks.
Or will he look to the other Florida teams (I'm guessing Florida itself being in the SEC might fall afoul of the same no schollie rule that applies in the Big 10 for intra-conference transferees).
Or does he look back over his shoulder at the schools he passed on when choosing the Volunteers?
Guessing Auburn is out, same reasoning as Florida, the others were a diverse group -- Kansas State -- somehow I cannot see the K. State coach picking up a "troubled kid" project. South Florida, close to home, but a smaller school, will ego get in the way? Or North Carolina State ... Coach there seems to have no problem with flash, sass and gas. I think we may have a winner...

Tennessee seems to be pretty deep enough at QB with Erik Ainge, Rick Clausen, and Johnathan Crompton for this to affect them really.

My personal opinion is that Schaeffer will go to a smaller school in Florida, Central or Southern Florida maybe.

Yes, if he transferred to another D-1A school and sat out 2005, he'd have 3 seasons of eligibility left.

Two Teams:

Marshall

West Virginia

I liked his game a lot. It looked, as I only glanced at the article, that he was not shown the door but given his status as low-man and a forthcoming lack of PT he'd rather go so place and be a featured guy.

UCF and USF are great options, and good 'ol Howard down here would take him in a heartbeat putting him 10 minutes from his hometown of Deerfield Beach in the lushly landscaped Long Island infested Boca Raton I-95/Glades Rd intersection also known as FAU.
