    The Buckeyes return all
    four starting pitchers from
    last year, including 10-game
    winner Dan DeLucia, a first
    team All-Big Ten selection.

    Oct. 4, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Five weeks of fall baseball practice culminates next week at Bill Davis Stadium with the annual Scarlet and Gray World Series, which this year will be a best-of-five intra-squad showdown, where pride is on the line.
"This is our biggest event of the fall season," Bob Todd, who is entering his 20th season at Ohio State, said. "We match up our better hitters against our better pitchers. This way, we as a coaching staff can get a true evaluation of their abilities. With a good showing, players can win or lose a starting job."
What is at stake? Well... steak. The winning team gets a catered meal of steak, chicken, ribs and potatoes. The meal is served on nice plates with silverware and the players are served in a pleasing atmosphere. The losing team gets to share a pot of beans and hot dogs with plastic plates and utensils and watch the victors enjoy the spoils of winning.
Fall baseball is an important time for the program. The five-week period gives the coaching staff an early opportunity to evaluate the team.
"With the Scarlet and Gray World Series we try to create an atmosphere and intensity of what we will see in the spring," Todd said. "This is a big jump for the freshmen to go from the high school setting to playing Division I college baseball.
"We will evaluate not just how they perform on the playing field, but we will also try to assess how they handle things mentally. Once the intensity cranks up, the ability to play with poise is crucial."
Admission to the games is free. The Diamond Club will be tailgating outside the stadium prior to the game Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
The Buckeyes return 18 lettermen from last season and welcomed 14 newcomers, including 12 freshmen, to the team when practice began Sept. 11.
The squad will have to find replacements for third baseman Ronnie Bourquin, a third-round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers, and shortstop Jedidiah Stephen, an eighth-round selection by the Baltimore Orioles. Ohio State returns all four starting pitchers, including ace Dan DeLucia, a 10-game winner and first team All-Big Ten selection, Cory Luebke, Jake Hale and J.B. Shuck, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. Luebke, a third-team All-Big Ten selection, returned to school after being drafted in the 22nd round by the Texas Rangers.

"We are happy Cory Luebke decided to come back to school," Todd said. "We obviously lost the left side of our infield, so we have to find a shortstop and third baseman. With three All-Big Ten players - Eric Fryer behind the plate, Jason Zoeller at second base and Matt Angle in center field - we are solid up the middle. This will be the first time in my memory our entire pitching rotation is back. We'll have to play strong defensively behind them."
Ohio State will begin the 2007 season in its own tournament, Feb. 23-25, at the New York Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. James Madison, Kansas State and Seton Hall will join the Buckeyes at the event.

    Eric Fryer was 2-for-3
with a pair of RBI in the
    top of the seventh that
    gave Gray a 6-5 lead
    over Scarlet.

    Box Score

    COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The Gray team squandered a 5-4 lead as Scarlet scored four runs the top of the seventh inning, but in the bottom of the inning Gray scored three runs to salvage an 8-8 tie in the opening game of the annual Scarlet and Gray World Series Monday at Bill Davis Stadium.
The one-run Gray lead evaporated in the seventh, mostly in part to four walks by Scarlet pitching in the inning. Brad Hays (Fr., Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) issued the first walk by either pitching staff to Matt Curran (Fr., Wormleysburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) to start the inning. Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) reached on a fielder's choice, but the quick-moving Curran was able to beat the throw to second before he stole third. Then with one out, Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) doubled over the centerfielder's head to give Scarlet a one-run lead, 6-5.
With two out, Ben Toussant (Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) doubled down the left-field line to plate Fryer for a 7-5 lead. Hays walked Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) before Dean Wolosiansky (Fr., Uniontown, Ohio/Green) came into the game. He walked the bases loaded before walking in Toussant for the eighth run.
Scarlet, which at one point had built a 5-1 lead, was not done, getting three runs in the bottom of the inning to force a tie. Back-to-back one-out singles by Cory Rupert (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) and J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) put two on for Ryan Dew (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who singled up the middle to score Rupert. Shuck went to third on a fielder's choice by Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) and scored on a single by Brian DeLucia (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson). A single to shallow center by Kris Moorman (Sr., St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) scored pinch runner Brad Brookbank (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) to tie the game.

"People will say there is no tying in baseball, but to save pitching for the rest of the week, we knew we would not play more than seven innings today no matter what the situation might have been," head coach Bob Todd said.
Gray gave up a two-out hit in the top of the first inning, but got a fly out to keep the run from scoring. Rupert beat out an infield single with one out and went to second when Shuck singled through the right side. Both runners moved up on a ground out by Dew and then scored on a double to the gap in right-center field by Miller.
Scarlet came through with another two-out hit in the second, a double by Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg), he was left there after a fly out ended the inning.
Gray got another hit in the third from Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) and then another two hits in the fourth, though neither run scored. Facing his older brother, 2006 10-game winner Dan DeLucia (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), Brian DeLucia nubbed a ball down the third base line for a hit. He went to third on a single through the left side by Adam Schneider (Sr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura), but was thrown out trying to steal third for the third out.
Scarlet scored its first run of the game on a solo home run by Hurley. Arp followed with his second double, but could not move up a base thanks to three fly outs.
Gray added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to build a 5-1 lead. Warren Sizemore (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown Univ.) came into the game in place of Dan DeLucia and gave up a bunt single by Cory Kovanda (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Kovanda moved up to third on a pair of ground outs and then scored on a double to right-center field by Shuck. Dew followed with a two-run home to extend the lead to four runs.
Scarlet got three runs back in the top of the sixth. Jonathan Zizzo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]) led off the inning with a triple to the wall in right-center field. After Fryer was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) scored Zizzo with a single through the left side. Toussant singled to center to load the bases for Hurley. Hurley sacrificed himself with a fly out to center to score Fryer, but an errant throw by Angle allowed Zoeller to score from second and pull Scarlet within one run, 5-4.
Brian DeLucia led all hitters in going 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Gray, while Dew drove in three runs with his two hits. Rupert and Shuck also had a pair of hits for the Gray. Fryer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored to help pace Scarlet. Toussant and Arp also had two hits.
Dan DeLucia, the starter for the Scarlet team, allowed two runs on six hits in four innings, while Josh Barrera (So., Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan), the starter for the Gray team, lasted five innings. He allowed one run on four hits. Gray out-hit Scarlet, 14-9. Each team had one error.
The best-of-five series continues Tuesday with another seven-inning game at 3:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. The Buckeye Diamond Club will be tailgating in the parking lot prior to the game Wednesday.

    Box Score

    COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Gray sprinted out to a 4-0 lead, but back-to-back four-run innings by the Scarlet gave them a 10-6 victory Tuesday in game two of the Scarlet and Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, Scarlet moves to 1-0-1 in the best-of-five series after the teams played to an 8-8 Monday in the opening game.
Scarlet scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to spark it to victory. Trailing 4-2 entering the fourth, Scarlet used a lead-off triple by Wes Schirtzinger (Sr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North). He scored with a one-out double by Chris Griffin (Fr., Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North). Arp reached second on a single by Jonathan Zizzo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]). A fielder's choice by Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) stopped Arp from scoring. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) doubled to left-center to score both Zizzo and Kennedy. Fryer moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw by the Gray third baseman who was fielding a grounder by Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro). That gave Scarlet a two-run lead, 6-4.
Scarlet blew the game open with another four-spot in the fifth. Chris Macke (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) drew a lead off walk and went to second on a grounder through the right side by Matt Streng (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and scored on a pinch-hit single up the middle by Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Arp was out at second as Zizzo spoiled a double play by reaching first just ahead of the throw to first. That put runners at the corners for Kennedy, who singled to right to score Streng.

A second throwing error on third baseman Brian DeLucia (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) allowed Zizzo to score the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Kennedy led all batters in going 3-for-4 for the Scarlet. He knocked in two runs and scored three, while Fryer batted in four. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) led the Gray in going 2-for-4 with three RBI. J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) got the win for Scarlet. He allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work before handing the ball over to Eric Shinn (Fr., Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest), who allowed two seventh-inning runs by the Gray on two hits. Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown Univ.) took the loss for the Gray after allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings pitched.
As it did in game one, Gray jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a couple of runs in the top of the first inning. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led off the game with a single to shallow left-center field and advanced to second on a one-out single through the right side by Shuck. A double steal put both runners in scoring position. Miller plated both runners when he beat out an infield single. A throw home trying to stop Shuck from scoring was not in time. Scarlet stranded a runner at third base in the bottom of the inning.
Gray added a run in the second when Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored on a ground out by Cory Rupert (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison). Kovanda reached with a one-out single to left-center field. He reached third on Angle's hit-and-run.
Miller came through with another RBI in the third inning, sending a solo shot over the left-field fence to lift Gray to a 4-0 lead. Scarlet came back with two runs in the bottom of the third, the first on a solo home run to left by Kennedy. Fryer followed with a double, went to second on a single by Hurley and scored on a ground out by Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
Game three of the Scarlet and Gray World Series will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Diamond Club will be tailgating in the parking lot beginning at 5 p.m. The teams will play again Thursday and Friday, if necessary. Both games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Scarlet pulled away with six runs in the eighth and final inning on its
way to a 14-10 victory vs. the Gray Thursday to clinch Ohio State baseball's annual Scarlet and Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, Scarlet finished 2-0-1 in the series. Gray (0-2-1) needed a win to force another game.
It was a rollercoaster of a game. Gray scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead, but after a four-run fourth and a three-run fifth, Scarlet took a 7-5 lead. Gray tied the game with two in the bottom of the fifth, but Scarlet came right back to take an 8-7 lead with a run in the sixth. Gray scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and carried a 10-8 lead into the eighth.
It appeared Gray would be forcing a fourth game in the series after getting Scarlet to strikeout and fly out to start the inning, but the third out proved too difficult.
Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) started the hit parade, getting a double to left. He went to third on a single to left by Chris Macke (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North). Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) tied the game by delivering Kennedy and Macke with a single through the left side.
Ben Toussant (Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) singled to right to score Fryer and then a double to the gap in right-center field by Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) plated both Zoeller and Toussant. Chris Griffin (Fr., Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) singled to shallow left center to bring Arp home. Matt Curran (Fr., Wormleysburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) kept the inning alive by drawing a walk before Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Gray got a one-out double from Adam Schneider (Sr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura), but Brian DeLucia (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) struck out and Ryan Dew (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilboune) flied out to end the game.
The teams combined for 31 hits, 18 from the Scarlet, which had to overcome four errors, including three in the third inning that helped lead to five Gray runs.
In that inning, Gray scored its five runs on four hits getting RBI from Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling), two from J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) and another from Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby). Shuck finished 2-for-5 in the game with four RBI. He delivered two more runs in the fourth inning. Shuck, Angle, Miller, Schneider and DeLucia each had two of the Gray's 13 hits.
Zoeller provided the knockout from the Scarlet in going 5-for-5 with five RBI. He singled in the second, doubled in two runs in the fourth, single in a run in the fifth and plated two more runs with a single in the eighth. Kennedy was 3-for-5, while Macke, Toussant, Arp and Griffin each added two hits.
On Tuesday, Scarlet gets a catered meal of steak, chicken, ribs and potatoes. The meal is served on nice plates with silverware and the players are served in a pleasing atmosphere. The losing team gets to share a pot of beans and hot dogs with paper plates and plastic utensils and watch the victors enjoy the spoils of winning.
Arp led all batters, going 5-for-9 for a .556 batting average. He doubled three times and drove in three runs. DeLucia (6-for-12), Shuck (6-for-12) and Fryer (5-for-10) batted .500, while Zoeller and Kennedy joined DeLucia and Shuck with six hits in three games. Fryer, Zoeller and Miller each drove in seven runs, while Shuck plated six. Fryer scored seven times.
As individual units, the Scarlet batted .381, while Gray batted .350. Pitching was a different story as the Scarlet managed a 6.95 ERA compared to a 10.71 ERA by the Gray. Scarlet committed seven errors in the three games, while Gray finished the series with five miscues.
The series concluded fall practice for the Ohio State baseball team. The Buckeyes open the season Feb. 23-25 by serving as the host of a four-team tournament at the New York Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. James Madison, Kansas State and Seton Hall round out the field.

Yeah, I agree Scoot. I'm looking forward to the season (as usual,)

"Scarlet committed seven errors in the three games, while Gray finished the series with five miscues."

This bothers me. They committed Waaaaaaay too many errors last year. I hate giving up outs like that.
