For those of us that are lazy and don't like having to go to other sites (that is me:) )

From the OZone -

Football: An agreement for SBC to sponsor the Ohio State-Michigan football games in 2004 and 2005 will not go forward, officials from both universities announced today (Oct. 27).

Although the institutions were close to an agreement to have SBC support the games and supply funding to other programs at the two schools, the details of the contract could not be finalized to the schools’ satisfaction.

Andy Geiger, director of athletics at The Ohio State University, said: "We were excited about the positive impact the agreement would have on the Department of Athletics, the University and the community.

"But as we attempted to move forward, it became apparent that this agreement could detract from the great tradition of the game itself.

"Given that possibility, and the fast-approaching date of this year’s game, the two universities agreed it was in their best interest not to pursue the arrangement at this time.

Bill Martin, director of athletics at the University of Michigan, said: "We greatly value the support SBC has given to our athletic department over the years, and they are a terrific corporate sponsor.

"I believe that corporate support is essential to the financial health of our athletics program, and to our ability to offer opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the national level.

"However, that support has to be consistent with our values and the tradition we share with our fans."

Interesting article on why the deal was killed. Seems the Michigan AD didn't bother to tell the University President about the alumni enraging deal until the last minute. I wonder why our University President didn't put an end to this? Maybe she sucks and doesn't give a rat's ass about the athletic department or Ohio State's tradition. Yeah, that's probably it. :(

MICHAEL ROSENBERG: Why U-M killed the SBC deal

Coleman, alumni rebel; AD Martin takes blame

October 28, 2004

The Game will remain The Game.

The University of Michigan on Wednesday pulled out of plans to sell title sponsorship to its annual football game against Ohio State. We hardly knew ye, "SBC Michigan-Ohio State Classic."

A lot of alumni complained about the proposed sponsorship, and now U-M says it will respect its "traditions" and "values."

How nice. But that oversimplifies why the deal died.

School president Mary Sue Coleman killed it. And she did it largely because she just found out about it.

When news of the deal filtered out Monday night, the athletic department hurriedly announced it was "finalizing" the contract. Well, if you know anything about the folks at U-M, you know they never announce something is being finalized. Typically, they're hesitant to announce when something is done.

Tuesday afternoon, when I asked U-M athletic director Bill Martin about sounding out all the proper people, including alumni, he said, "We haven't gone through that process yet."

No kidding. Martin admitted Wednesday that Coleman didn't know about the SBC negotiations until within the last week. That was inexcusable. If there's any chance that a bunch of alums will be furious, the president must be informed first.

"That's a very fair statement," Martin said Wednesday. "You say, 'How does this happen?' It happened because Bill Martin screwed up."

Martin said he failed to grasp the impact of selling naming rights.

"This is my fault," Martin said. "I will say that out front. I did not focus on the naming aspect of this thing soon enough. There is nobody to blame in this situation but me."

(Astute U-M historians will remember that former AD Tom Goss was fired in 2000 after a similar offense -- failing to inform then-president Lee Bollinger when star basketball player Jamal Crawford was about to be ruled ineligible. It wasn't Goss' only mistake, but it was his final one.)

By the time Coleman found out, Ohio State thought it had a deal. SBC thought it had a deal. And Martin thought he had a deal -- but he was wrong.

Martin (and his hand-picked corporate development director, Megan McCallister) didn't have the authority to strike the deal. It is the kind of thing that can happen when an extremely successful businessman like Martin leaves his own company to work at a bureaucracy the size of U-M.

By the time angry alums e-mailed and called the university, the tide had begun to turn -- the alums just made it a flood. There was already an internal movement to back out because Coleman, unlike Martin, knew alumni would be furious. In fact, Martin was pressured to withdraw even before word leaked Monday night.

You might not understand the outrage. After all, SBC sponsors the Texas-Oklahoma game (the SBC Red River Shootout) and corporate advertising is all over college sports.

But many Michigan fans think The Game is special. And the idea of auctioning off title sponsorship smacked of a cheesy sell-out.

And if you think U-M needed the money, then you (like the athletic department) didn't think this through. The contract would have lost money for the university.

Oh, on the surface, it would have paid $265,000 to each school (slightly more than the $260,000 I reported Wednesday based on information from a U-M source).

But U-M is in the middle of a campaign to raise $2.5 billion. That's eight zeroes, for those scoring at home. And this SBC deal would be worth around 1/100th of 1 percent of that.

Forget what you think about the sponsorship. This simply would have been bad business.

Why irritate potential donors for what basically amounts to weekend pizza money?

There actually is a reason: The athletic department is a separate financial entity from the university as a whole. And though the university raises money at an almost unrivaled rate, the athletic department is recovering from years of fund-raising neglect.

In the meantime, U-M has irritated one of its corporate partners (SBC), one of its fellow Big Ten members (Ohio State) and many alums.

In other words, it has not been the best PR week in University of Michigan history.

But hey, the fans get what they want. Coleman and the school's regents avoid further embarrassment. The one who should really be embarrassed about this is Martin, but that's what happens when you don't keep your boss informed.

I'm pretty sure that bitch Karen Holbrook went to scUM. There really isn't any other reason I can think of as to why she is trying so hard to ruin tOSU's athletic department, football team, and it's unparalleled tradition. Stupid cunt.
