'Police Academy' set for eighth edition
By Liza Foreman, Reuters | July 8, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- "Police Academy" is back. After a decade's absence from the big screen, the cop comedy franchise is gearing up for an eighth installment.

"I felt it was time to start again," said series creator Paul Maslansky. "I saw that 'Starsky & Hutch' and a number of other revivals were doing really well. 'Police Academy' has such a great history. I thought, 'Why not?"'

According to Maslansky, who will serve as an executive producer, the talent from the first seven features has expressed a keen interest in the revival, with Maslansky looking to combine both new and the "original talent" for the next "Police Academy."

"We became very much like a family," he said. "It's is very unusual to have seven films with virtually all the same major cast."

The project is being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures and its Australian joint-venture partner Village Roadshow. The project is out to writers, with the exact direction of the newest installment yet to be determined.

The most recent sequel in the franchise was "Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow" in 1994. The first "Police Academy" hit screens in 1984, bringing in a domestic box office take of $81.2 million. Then it was a film a year through 1989, with "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" released in 1985, "Police Academy 3: Back in Training" in 1986, "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" in 1987, "Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach" in 1988 and "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" in 1989. Altogether, the franchise brought in more than $230 million at the domestic box office. Maslansky also serviced the small screen with "Police Academy: The Animated Series" in 1993 and "Police Academy: The Series" in 1997.

Maslansky is working on several other projects, including another institution-based project, "Stunt School." There's also a New Orleans-set jazz feature about the life of Buddy Bolden, the first king of jazz.

Homer Simpson has two of the best quotes regarding Policy Academy:

"When I first heard that Marge was joining the police academy, I thought it would be fun and zany, like that movie -- Spaceballs. But instead it was dark and disturbing. Like that movie -- Police Academy."

"We live in a society of laws, why do you think I took you to see all of those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well I didn't hear anybody laughing! Did you? Except at that guy who made sound effects. Vroom! Beep! Honk! Honk! Ha-ha."

News On Rocky 6 And Rambo 4

Stallone won't give up without a fight...

Sylvester Stallone is set on Rocky 6 and Rambo 4 being made. The scoop is:

“Sly wants to get both Rocky VI and Rambo IV out in the year 2006. These are the two projects he's most trying to get made right now and why not -- they have made lots and lots and lots of money for all involved. Bill Conti is ready to record the BIG Rocky theme score one last time and the crew is ready to go. Stallone is strong arming MGM with his lawsuit and they look like they will cave in and just make the movie. If they don't, Sly is going to make an example out of the studio with why not to stand in the way of his personal vision.

“On the Rambo IV front, it seems Martin Cambell (Goldeneye) is out of the running to possibly direct Rambo IV. That leaves John McTiernan and F. Gary Gray. A new RAMBO toyline is also on the drawing boards. C2's T3 toyline proved successful and they think an all new RAMBO toyline will be just as successful. Remember all those John Rambo action figures everyone was playing with in Reagan era 1980’s?”

Stallone talks "Rocky 6"

StalloneZone reports that Sylvester Stallone was on ESPN's SportsCenter and talked a little bit about the planned "Rocky 6," which has been in development hell for quite some time.

"Actually, (referring to the opponent), he's kind of in the same situation that Rocky was. Even though he's the champion, it's the same situation that Rocky was in in Rocky 1. You know, it's kind of like, an uncertain point in his life and even though he has all the skills, we don't know if he has the real heart for it."

MGM went ahead with a "Rocky 6" after promising Stallone a very small budget. It has been reported that the storyline would involve Rocky coming out of retirement to fight one last fight in order to save an orphanage.

Most likely, Stallone would begin the project after doing "Rampart Scandal," which will have him entering the Tupac/Biggie murder mysteries.
