Savannah, GA/Tybee Island

BuckBackHome

Wolverine is largest member of weasel family
I am heading down to Savannah this spring for a few days of work and am hoping to spend a few days afterwards with the family on Tybee Island. We have never been there so any advice on what to do in Savannah as well as where to stay on Tybee Island is appreciated. Thanks!

You can go sit where Forrest Gump sat and you can take a nice horse carriage tour around the downtown area to see the beautiful Southern houses and gardens.

There is also an area (can't recall the name) that is on the river\bayou area that has shops, restaurants, and bars. It is interesting as it sits on the underside\backside of a hill that has one of the main drags on it.

Tybee is an amazing little place. You will love it. We usually stay here

In Savannah, hit River Street, talk a walk in Bonaventure Cemetery, go to Paula Deen's lunch buffet

In Tybee...hit as many of the little local spots as possible. They all have good food and local flavor.

I think you're referring to River St.

There is a small local restaurant called Sweet Potatoes that is very good. Driving by it you would never think anything of it, but the chicken is great.

I love Savannah! As Grad said, the Bonaventure Cemetery just outside of Savannah in Thunderbolt is a cool place to take a stroll. I took some pics with my iPhone last time we were down there this past summer:

You can spend a long afternoon just strolling through the many city parks in the downtown historical area. The Savannah College of Art and Design has a pretty cool museum, and the city itself has several other museums that are worth visiting, including the Telfair Museum.

As far as food, I've been to Paula Deen's and I would skip it and go to the place she ripped off instead. Miss Wilkes' Dinning Room, open only for lunch, serves up the best Southern food I've ever had. Expect to wait in line for 45 minutes or an hour, but it is sooo worth it. You'll be seated at a large table full of other people who you can chat with and the food is served family style. Butter beans, red rice, okra, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, greens, etc. etc. etc. It all sits on the table and you continue to eat until you no longer can. Meanwhile, fantastic fried chicken and one other main dish will be sent to your table as it is prepared. You can't miss this!

If you want a really fine dining experience, the two best options are The Olde Pink House and Elizabeth's on 37th. Both are outstanding, though not cheap.

Make sure you go to Leopold's Ice Cream, an old school ice cream parlor, for some desert.

Other places that I would recommend for food at which I've eaten or read good reviews include Soho South Cafe (lots of local art on the walls and an eclectic setting), Crystal Beer Parlor for good pub fare, Alligator Soul, Nobel Fare (we keep missing this place but some seem to think it is the best deal in town for a really good meal), Local Eleven Ten (we had a good meal here last time--set in an old bank just off the southern edge of Forsyth Park, it also has a roof deck that is supposed to be a good place to get drinks), and Masada Cafe (actually a cafeteria in a local church that apparently has great Southern food).

I actually tend to avoid the riverfront because it feels very touristy to me. I do like the setting at the Moon River Brewing Company, though. Their beer is just OK, but it's a pretty nice place to have a pint and they sometimes have live blues, jazz, brass bands, etc.

Of all those places, Miss Wilkes' Dinning Room is the one you absolutely must visit. Enjoy! Savannah is one of the Southern cities in which I'd gladly take up residence.

Sepia, have you been to Charleston? If so, do you prefer one over the other? I am just curious, having been to both myself I much prefer Charleston over Savannah.

I love the numerous gardens, cemeteries, restaurants, parks and the Market Place that Charleston offers. You have a number of Islands to go to. I love Poes out on Sullivan's Island, as well as, the beaches in that area.

I've not been to Charleston since I was a teenager. I've been to Savannah several times because I used to live in the Florida panhandle (and later the Tampa Bay area) and we have good friends that are from Hilton Head. Because we hate Hilton Head aside from the beaches (obviously I'm not a golfer), we always end up spending a few days in Savannah whenever we visit them there. I really want to hit up Charleston again now that I'm old enough to appreciate it, because I've heard several people say they prefer it to Savannah.

My wife and I spent a day in Savannah this past spring. We parked the car, and did the Old Towne Trolley Tour. The guide(s) were entertaining, the city itself is beautiful, and we had a very good time. The trolley tours can be a little pricey, and I'm not sure if it translates well if you're taking a bunch of kids, but I've enjoyed doing the Old Towne Tour in Savannah, and in San Diego (last October).

Was there a couple weeks ago. Let me rate my top 3 experiences: 1.) Mrs Wilkes 2.) Bonaventure Cemetery 3.) the Godfather at Zunzi's. Believe or not I'm really not a fatty in real life, but the food down there was amazing. I would be 300+ if I lived there.

(Zunzi's & Bonventure pics wouldn't upload)
