The hype would be unbearable - Tebow-esque even. To me the most obvious comparison would be Wally Szczerbiak - high scoring, infinite range, both white guys from NY who went to lesser-known basketball schools and generally account for about half of their team's offensive output by themselves. He doesn't have Wally's height or length though, and he passes about as much as Allen Iverson. He does have one NBA skill though: whining about calls. He was treated rather gingerly by the refs last night, yet he still found occasions to throw his arms up in the air to complain. I wouldn't be afraid to see him play the Buckeyes - I think a combo of Craft & Lighty could keep him in check as long as the refs in any such game don't protect him.
re: The teams - I kind of agree about the relative strength of the two teams. Both teams have rather weak schedules - BYU a little less so. I'm not going to pretend that if both continue down their current path they won't end up as protected seeds - but I don't see either as being among the real top 16 teams in the country. I suppose of the two, I could see BYU breaking in to the Sweet Sixteen with the right matchups simply because one man can carry a team at least that far.

He has crazy range, which I expected (he's a white guard, so I naturally just kinda expected Reddick/Scheyer), but I thought his crossover was VERY quick and his ability to get to the rim was a little stunning to me. I was also very impressed by his ability to stop on drives and pull-up, but even more so by his ability to hang in the air for a very long time before shooting, which allows him to free himself of the defender and get an open look. He is no Steve Nash, but I thought he did a pretty good job of passing when he had drawn defenders to him. It may have come a little late at times, but I certainly didn't see an Allen Iverson-type ballhog. It also didn't help that, besides Davies, no one on the team was giving him ANY help that game.
I think he tries too hard to dribble through doubles sometimes, and I think that at times he kinda forces bad shots (whether because he's feeling hot or because he thinks he needs to make a play and tries too hard). But EVERY big time scorer ever does that, so I really can't fault him at all.
I also disagree that he was treated rather gingerly by the refs. I only saw the last 4ish minutes of the first and the second half, but I thought in the second half that Fredette didn't get a few calls that he should have. He whined the refs, but I can't remember once thinking he was being ridiculous in lobbying for a call.
I will say that his defense leaves a lot to be desired, especially in just the effort part. But to me he kinda reminds me of Steph Curry with better driving ability. Make it rain from anywhere, get your own shots, but Curry didn't have the crossover or the strength that Fredette has. I have a very hard time believing he doesn't have an NBA future.
I would love to see Craft match up against Fredette and see if his elite lateral agility can make Fredette a one-dimensional player (although the idea of him shooting over Craft all day doesn't really thrill me). But I would hate for that match up to be in the tournament, because Fredette is the kind of player who can carry his team to the Elite Eight, just like Steph Curry.
