Been to SD many times. La Jolla and Cabrillo are good recommendations.

The zoo is a given.

You can tour the USS Midway in the harbor area. They have several other ships as well along with harbor cruises. Seaport Village in that same area is just shops that you could find anywhere.

Balboa Park in the downtown area has a bunch of museums if you are into that sort of thing.

SD has your typical historic/touristy areas with lots of bars and shops. Gaslamp district is better for entertainment and that is where they now have the baseball stadium as well. Old Town is more historic (duh).

You can run down to Tijuana and watch my cousin's ex have sex with a donkey - but I guess you now need a passport for that (I think that applies even if you aren't going to see the donkey). Personally I hate Tijuana - or any of the Mexican border towns that make me feel guilty for having money in the bank.

Mission Bay is more of an active area - bike paths, boat rentals, that sort of thing. Great place to see some hot bods.

Cabrillo monument is probably my favorite spot. Be sure and drive down on the ocean side and visit the tide pools.

Traffic can be a bitch and their freeway system is very confusing. And don't pick up any hitch hikers - especially if they volunteer to ride in your trunk.

Ocean Beach for the longest pier on the West Coast and some of the BEST lobster omleettes or mango pancakes ever eaten(in the Cafe on the end of the pier. )


Also,if you go at low tide there is a huge tidepool reef just to the left side of the same pier.

If you want to splurge on dinner, Roppongi and George's at the Cove are great places to eat. Sushi Ota is a dive looking place in a strip mall, but probably the best sushi I've had. I think Zagat's rates it as one of the best sushi in SD. It was packed so you need reservations.

Hiking in Torey Pines State Preserve is really nice...especially in the evening when the sun is setting on the ocean

You're not going to the zoo because you're afraid... the word is out and a number of those animals have you in their sites.. they're takin your ass out if they get their hands on you in retaliation for harming kin
