Sad news - body of UF student recovered

Well, I have to say that BP is known for its dark humor, "Firey Crash Goodness", etc.. I mean, I posted a thread about a Priest who is lost in the ocean after flying a bunch of party balloons. Now, that amused me because of the facts, and this does not (beaten to death, fingers cut off, etc), I think that everybody is sorry that he's dead, but some think that he bore a bunch of what you'd call "comparative fault"...

I have to admit that I'm completely shocked at the attitude of (at least) BUCKYLE and Brewtus. FWIW, to me, a tragedy occurs when any life is taken by another, unless that person deserves it because he/she took the life of another. Not to get into a political discussion, but anyone that doesn't have sympathy when any non-"criminal" is tortured and killed, regardless of circumstance, is an asshole.

No sympathy for someone that was kidnapped, potentially tortured, and definitely killed? I don't care what the risks are, or whether he knew about them. Something like this is still a despicable act, and a monumental tragedy...he still left behind a family that will grieve for his loss, and likely miss him terribly. If this is actually how you feel, then you're an asshole.
It would be awesome if this was the way people thought about all the Iraqis killed over there too.

Well you're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I've been called worse things than an asshole, but I don't consider this a tragedy. Yes, the kidnappers who did this deserve to be tortured and killed themselves and I do feel for his family and friends who are morning his loss. But I'll save my sympathies for the soldiers over their who are killed and injured while serving their country for a fraction of the pay these contractors get. The death of a soldier is a tragedy, not a kid who voluntarily put himself in danger and even acknowledged that the company he worked for was "ghetto".

This mitigates it somewhat. But you should have stopped here.

I wasn't aware it was a contest.

Assuming you mean non-terrorist or Al Quaeda Iraqis, I completely agree.
Yes I do. I agree 100% with your caveat that those who take another life or otherwise seriously harm someone else should be exempt from deep sympathy (although, even that can be argued). Unfortunately, the loss of life on both sides falls into both categories. We aren't all "angels" and they aren't all "terrorists". And vice versa.
