During the width and breadth of the Saban Era in Tuscaloosa, it has appeared that the former defensive back and secondary guru has cast a dragnet around the Southeast, locking down the most talented defensive backs and wooing them to T'Town. But the recruitment and subsequent commitment of Vonn Bell to the Ohio State Buckeyes was a coup, as after dogged recruiting by tOSU head coach Urban Meyer, Bell elected to eschew his Tennessee leanings and the defensive back king-maker at Alabama for the more northerly confines of Columbus.

ENTERING HIS JUNIOR SEASON, BELL BECOMING A BUCKEYE LEADER
We all blinked and suddenly Ohio State safety Vonn Bell became a junior (by football season, anyway).
Seems like yesterday he was picking off Tajh Boyd in the Orange Bowl and we were all asking “why didn’t he start all season,” doesn’t it?
Bell has gone from wide-eyed – yet highly touted – rookie to playmaker to leader in fairly short order. In 16 career starts, Bell has seven interceptions. Swiping an opponent’s pass nearly every other game is elite stuff. Only 11 Buckeyes in school history has had more in one season than the team-leading six Bell had in 2014.
More importantly, the Rossville, Ga. native has become a leader, which will be important in 2015, with the loss of Doran Grant from the Ohio State defensive backfield. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety is taking charge and organizing off-season workouts for the Buckeye secondary.
As a sophomore and first-year starter, Bell was one of Ohio State’s best defensive players. He finished second on the team in tackles (92) and solo stops (57) to linebacker Joshua Perry. He also registered two tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.
He and Tyvis Powell will be one of the country’s most experienced and formidable safety tandems this fall. If both remain healthy, it gives Luke Fickell and Chris Ash a potent starting pair at the back of a defense that made great strides in 2014 and looks to be even stronger in 2015.
With such a safety net (no pun intended) in the secondary – the duo of Bell and Powell combined for 10 interceptions last season – it provides some measure of coverage (again, no pun intended) for the cornerbacks, who will be led by Eli Apple instead of Grant this season.
Apple will be looking to replace Ohio State’s lockdown corner spot, vacated by Grant, and someone else will have to step up and play opposite Eli, who had a solid 2014 year himself (53 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups and a fumble recovery).
It’s a great sign for the Buckeye defense that Bell is stepping up, organizing workouts and taking the secondary under his wing. That’s what good leaders do, even ones with only 16 career starts.

The future's so bright, I've gotta wear... shades.
He didn't come out of nowhere, it was just a great defensive play. He was watching the quarterback's eyes the whole time. Watch the replay from the stands where you see Kiffin throw his hands up for a touchdown and then they fall down real quick as soon as Bell picks it off. That shows the best angle of his pursuit /tracking of the ball.
He has that instinctive awareness for where the ball is at all times, so hopefully the kid is on fire next year and gets about 4 or 5 more of those. TD killing INTs.

He's a pure ball hawking Safety, and what everyone saw on HS films when he was being recruited. An Ed Reed type ball hawk at S, that once the ball went into the air, he became a weapon as well and could make plays that benefited the team

If you are a fan of rollercoaster recruitments, then you certainly enjoyed the chase for Vonn Bell. In the months leading up to 2013's National Signing Day, Ohio State, Alabama, and Tennessee all seemed to take turns at the top of Bell's leaderboard.
The five-star safety visited Columbus with his family in January, and Buckeye fans were able to follow the visit live via his brother's Twitter page. Following the visit, Bell would take trips to Tuscaloosa and Knoxville, but remained fairly quiet when talking about any potential frontrunner. The night before Signing Day, an image of Tennessee coaches celebrating (after receiving a commitment over the telephone) made its way to the Twitter world. Thus, a lot of the wind was taken out of Buckeye Nation's sails. On the morning of Signing Day and less than an hour before the live announcement, all hope was seemingly lost when Bruce Feldman tweeted out that Vonn Bell had committed to Tennessee.
Shortly thereafter, one of the nation's top prospects stepped to the podium at Ridgeville High.
Bell, to the chagrin of Tennessee fans everywhere, announced his decision to sign with Urban Meyer and The Ohio State University. Bell gave Urban Meyer a Signing Day victory over SEC powerhouses - most notably the Saban-led Crimson Tide. After announcing his decision, Bell told reporters that the Buckeyes would be coming for Bama, and they were going to "get that crystal ball and hold it up high as hell."

OHIO STATE'S THREE MOST UNDERRATED PLAYERS RETURNING IN 2015
VONN BELL
Here’s a case where a guy is pretty well-known and respected, gets a lot of ink, and is still underrated. As recently mentioned by our own Chris Lauderback, Bell is about as sure a thing as possible when it comes to tackling. If he gets his hands on a ball carrier, he makes the stop almost without exception.
Last season, Bell finished second on Ohio State in tackles (92), posting the most by a Buckeye safety in more than a decade. You need to go back to Mike Doss in the national championship season of 2002 for the last time an OSU safety registered more stops.
Bell also led Ohio State in interceptions, with six. C.J. Barnett, the leading safety in interceptions the previous two seasons had six in his final two years, combined. You have to go back to 2001 and Derek Ross to find a Buckeye with more picks in a season and it’s been more than two decades since an OSU safety had more.
The media covering the Big Ten only thought Bell was worthy of honorable mention all-conference status. The coaches didn’t even give Bell honorable mention All-B1G honors. Ouch!
